Strong start lifts Raiders to 5-2 win over Falcons

By For The Greene County Messenger 1 min read

Waynesburg Central scored four goals in the first half Wednesday night and keeper Scott Benco and his defense made the advantage stand for a 5-2 Section 3-AA victory at Brownsville.

The loss knocked the Falcons from playoff contention. Brownsville (4-7, 5-8) has one section match remaining against Washington and trails Beth-Center by two matches. The Bulldogs swept the season series with two one-goal victories (4-3, 2-1) to hold the tie-breaker.

Waynesburg improves to 9-3 in the section and 12-5 overall.

Eli Ruffcorn spotted the Falcons the early lead at 38:29, but two goals by Caleb Blair and single tallies by Jack Church and Gavin Benson gave the Raiders a 4-1 lead at halftime.

Blair completed the hat trick at 37:57 of the second half.

Ruffcorn scored his second goal, assisted by Nick Climes.

Nate Kovscek made 18 saves for the Falcons. Benco turned aside just one shot in the victory.
