Eagles win at Mapletown, 47-14

The game started 45 minutes late because of a lack of officials, but visiting Avella wasn’t bothered by the delay for a 47-14 Tri-County South Conference victory Friday night at Mapletown.

When the game finally started, the game was operated by three officials.

The Eagles (1-5, 2-7) pulled away with 19 points in the third quarter, opening up a 47-6 lead through three quarters.

Owen English scored four touchdowns for Avella on runs of 16, 7 and 35 yards, had a 60-yard punt return for a score and gained 218 yards rushing on just 18 carries. Frank Craig ran for 132 yards on 16 carries and scored on a 1-yard run.

Lance Stevenson had a hand in both touchdowns for Mapletown (0-6, 0-9). He had a 21-yard touchdown pass to Chuck Lash in the second quarter and then scored on a 26-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Stevenson ran for 33 yards on 10 carries. Lash caught four passes for 35 yards.
