Lady Mikes end season with win
Carmichaels closed out its girls basketball season with a 40-28 win over visiting Bentworth on senior night last Friday.
Although the Lady Mikes fell short of the playoffs, third-year coach Ian McCombs was proud to send off seniors Shelbee McCann, Gina Ranieri and Emily Menhart with a victory.
The rarity is that two of that group — Ranieri and Menhart — did not play at all last season, and McCannĢƵ junior year was slowed by an injury.
“All three of them are kind of best friends so itĢƵ neat to see them go through this journey together,” McCombs said. “All three of them were off and on playing basketball and they all decided kind of together that they were going to play their senior season. It helped the chemistry of the team because they had great chemistry coming in, great leadership skills.
“It was great to see them come together for their last night here. Our theme for tonight was ‘All in.’ You’re never going to get this moment back. Even if you’re a sophomore or junior, your time is going to come, you’ve got to realize that you’ve got to take every moment for what itĢƵ worth and give it everything that you have, because if not, thereĢƵ no chance to relive it.
“They gave it all they had and it ended up being a victory for us. I couldn’t be more proud of these girls. On and off the court, they’re the type of student-athletes that you want to have representing your school.”
