Waynesburg crowns 4 section champs, sends 8 to WPIAL finals
HEIDELBERG — Waynesburg Central had four first-place finishers in the Section 4-AAA wrestling tournament at Chartiers Valley High School Saturday afternoon.
The top five wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the WPIAL Class AAA Championships this weekend at Canon-McMillan High School.
Cole Homet (120), Trey Howard (145), Luca Augustine (152) and Ryan Howard (220) were all victors in the finals for the Raiders, who advanced a total of eight wrestlers.
Homet won with a first-period pin, sticking Luke Potts of Chartiers Valley in 1:25 at 120. Howard made a first-period takedown and second-period escape stand for a 3-0 victory over Tanner Rohaley at 145 and Augustine escaped in the third overtime for a 2-1 decision over Eli Brinsky of South Fayette.
It was AugustineĢƵ third victory over Brinsky in his varsity career and all were close wins for the Waynesburg 152-pounder.
“HeĢƵ a really tough kid,” said Augustine. “Every match gets closer and closer, and thatĢƵ how it should be.”
Howard wrapped up WaynesburgĢƵ day with a pin of Micah Killion of New Castle in 4:16 at 220.
The Raiders’ Colby Morris lost in the final at 160, 3-2, to West AlleghenyĢƵ Ty McGeary.
Also advancing for Waynesburg were Darnell Johnson, Colton Stoneking and Noah Tustin.
Johnson pinned Chartiers ValleyĢƵ Murat Zaynullaev in the third-place consolation bout at 170.
Stoneking suffered a loss by fall to TrinityĢƵ Giani Martini in the 126 third-place bout to finish fourth. Tustin also placed fourth at 182 after losing his third-place match to Canon-McMillanĢƵ Evan Miller, 4-1.
