WASHINGTON — Waynesburg Central trailed Canon-McMillan by 2½ points after wrestling concluded on Day 1 of the Tri-County Athletic DirectorĢƵ Association (TriCADA) Tournament last Friday at Trinity High School.

Coach Joe ThrockmortonĢƵ Raiders are seeking their third straight TriCADA team title and fifth overall. The Big Macs have 90½ points and Waynesburg Central has 88. Peters Township is in third place with 68½ points.

The Raiders’ Hunter Shriver (113), Cole Homet (120), Nate Stephenson (138), Trey Howard (145), Luca Augustine (152), Colby Morris (160), Darnell Johnson (170), Noah Tustin (182) and Ryan Howard (220) are still alive for a gold medal after advancing to the semifinals.

“We love this tournament,” Throckmorton said. “All the local schools together at one time in Double A and Triple A. There is some very good individuals in this tournament. It helps our guys work on what they need to work on to get ready for Hershey.

“The hard work pays off, and sometimes it can be tough to show improvement when these guys are wrestling some of the best guys in the country at Beast of the East and Powerade. ItĢƵ nice to be able to wrestle here against local kids and show where we are improving.”

Shriver advanced with a 7-3 decision over TrinityĢƵ Hunter Hickle.

Homet qualified for the final four at 120 pounds with falls over BentworthĢƵ Bruce Hook in the round of 16 and RinggoldĢƵ Ashton Slavick.

Stephenson advanced with a fall in 2:29 over Canon-McMillanĢƵ Ryan Clendaniel at 138. Trey Howard pinned Beth-CenterĢƵ Tyler Fisher in 1:11 during quarterfinal action. Howard placed sixth last season at TriCADA.

Augustine pinned BurgettstownĢƵ Jacob Loudin in 2:24 and earned an 11-3 major decision over McGuffeyĢƵ Ethan Barr in the round of eight.

Morris defended his No. 1 seed with a fall over WashingtonĢƵ Andrew Bryner in 1:49 to advance to the final four. Morris was second in last yearĢƵ tournament.

Johnson pinned Chartiers-HoustonĢƵ Jake Piatt in 1:40 and Beth-CenterĢƵ Dylan Dingle in 3:29 to earn a berth in the semifinals. Tustin pinned Albert GallatinĢƵ Malik Kirby in 34 seconds during quarterfinal action.

Ryan Howard, who was sixth in last yearĢƵ TriCADA, pinned BurgettstownĢƵ Jacob Paich in 2:37 during quarterfinal action.

Waynesburg Central has three additional wrestlers still alive for medals in Colton Stoneking (126), Nate Kirby (132) and Spencer Lesinski (285).

The Bulldogs have five semifinalists in Joey Holmes (106), Jimmy Gwyer (120), Trevor Pettit (132), Todd Fisher (138) and Jacob Baker (220).

“I am pleased with how we wrestled tonight and itĢƵ a step in the right direction,” Beth-Center coach Gary Welsh said. “We definitely have some work to do, but these younger guys are improving.”

Holmes advanced with a fall over South FayetteĢƵ Cohlman Carpender in 3:39.

Gwyer is headed to the final four after pinning Albert GallatinĢƵ Grant Lindsey in 4:38 at 120 pounds. Gwyer, who qualified for states as a sophomore, was fourth last year at TriCADA.

“Jimmy (Gwyer) peaked at the right time as a sophomore and made it to states,” Welsh said. “He beat a kid at regionals that beat him before to pull a pretty big upset. Last year, it didn’t quit pan out. He did the other role and lost to a kid he shouldn’t have lost to. I’ve been around it enough to know that all the things have to align, but he is a kid that will still be in the mix.”

Pettit earned a 5-0 decision over RinggoldĢƵ Logan Vickers in the round of 16 and pinned Chartiers-HoustonĢƵ Ty Mazutis in 3:52 to advance to the semifinals at 132.

“That was a big win for Trevor (Pettit),” Welsh said.

Fisher earned a 16-0 technical fall in 6:00 over Chartiers-HoustonĢƵ Kwaku Bimpong in the quarterfinals at 138 pounds.

Baker, who is the No. 1 seed at 220, is looking to improve on last yearĢƵ second-place finish. Baker earned a 6-0 decision over TrinityĢƵ Tyson Brophy in the quarters.

“Jacob (Baker) has had a solid career, but he has kind of flown under the radar,” Welsh said. “He made it to regionals as a junior and won a match out there. When heĢƵ wrestling at his best, I don’t count him out against anybody. He still has some stuff to work on, technique wise, he gets a little sloppy in the third, but I’m happy with Jacob.”

Beth-CenterĢƵ Kyle McCollum (113), Richard LaRosa (126), Tyler Fisher (145) and Dingle are still in contention for a medal.

One absence for the Bulldogs is Dominic Fundy. The senior was held out of TriCADA for precautionary health reasons.

“I rushed Dom (Fundy) back a little too soon from football,” Welsh said. “ThatĢƵ on me. He is a running back for football, and those guys take a beating. We will step back a little bit and make sure he is fresh and ready to go when the time comes.”

Albert GallatinĢƵ Hunter Milligan looks to improve on last yearĢƵ fourth-place finish at TriCADA. The senior earned a 20-5 technical fall in 5:34 over Canon-McMillanĢƵ Johnny Shanahan at 160 pounds to advance to the semifinals.

“We have some familiar opponents ahead of us tomorrow for Hunter (Milligan) that we are aware of,” Albert Gallatin coach Duane Dupont said. “We’ve got to take it one match at a time, keep attacking the way he has been, wrestle smart and keep his feet moving. I thought Hunter wrestled real well in his match tonight. He is a senior and has been around this a long time.”

The Colonials’ Bryson Kite (106), Lindsey (120), Chase Theodori (126), Xander Skiles (132), Taylor Clark (145), Nick Dodson (170), Kirby (182) and Shawn Loring (220) still have the opportunity to place out of the consolation bracket.

“I see some fight in them and they are working hard,” Dupont said. “We are making some mistakes that we are making that are costing us some matches, and that is something we have to correct in the practice room. We are hoping to have as many place winners as we can.”

BentworthĢƵ Jon Vargo, who was fifth in the state last year, is looking to improve upon his fifth-place finish at the TriCADA last season. Vargo pinned BurgettstownĢƵ Ethan Brothers in 3:44 to advance to the semifinals at 195.

The Bearcats’ Bryce (113) and Bruce Hook, West Martin (145), Owen Petrisek (160) and Lorenzo Axton (285) still have the opportunity to place.

RinggoldĢƵ Tairen Bundy won his quarterfinal match by fall in 1:26 of TrinityĢƵ Eli Bash at 106 pounds. Bundy finished fourth last season.

The Rams’ Jacob Duncan qualified for the semifinals with a fall in 1:47 of TrinityĢƵ James Porter at 145.

RinggoldĢƵ Slavick (120), Anthony Romasco (126), Logan Vickers (132), Landon Oslowski (138), Trent Gerard (152), Joe Black (182) and Alex Grossi (285) remain in contention for medals.

Jefferson MorganĢƵ Alex Lange advanced to the final four with a 9-6 decision over Chartiers-HoustonĢƵ Anthony Lento in the round of 16 and a fall over Gerard in 3:54 at 152 pounds.

The Rockets’ Mya Flores (106), Liam Ankrom (145), Colby Rutan (160), Justin Maddich (170), Ziggy Hague (182) and Jonathan Wolfe (195) remain in the consolations.

West GreeneĢƵ Daniel Collins (106), Hunter Hamilton (113), Austin Orndoff (126), Wyatt Tedrow (138), Brayden Moody (145), Kolin Walker (182) and Jacob Wilson (220) are still in contention for a medal.
