Raiders ‘pin’ 48-16 loss on Connellsville
CONNELLSVILLE — Connellsville and Waynesburg Central stepped away from section competition Tuesday night for their yearly match-up and the visiting Raiders proved to be a little more physical, pinning a 48-16 setback on the Falcons to pick up their fourth straight win over Connellsville.
“I’m very happy with my team tonight,” WaynesburgĢƵ Joe Throckmorton said. “This is my first group of seniors to win four straight from Connellsville. We know they like to compete, thatĢƵ why we try to keep them on our schedule.”
The match started at 132 pounds and Josh Maruniak got the Falcons off to a quick start with a 13-4 major decision over Nate Kirby. Maruniak scored three takedowns and a near-fall in the first period. He picked up an escape and takedown in the second and a takedown in the third giving the Falcons a 4-0 lead.
Waynesburg charged back winning nine straight matches.

Stephenson recorded a takedown in the second period before pinning Trout at 2:41 of the match. Trey Howard followed that with a first-period pin over Ayden Moore. Howard recorded five takedowns before ending the match at 1:37 giving Waynesburg a 12-4 lead.
Luca Augustine earned a decision at 152 pounds against Casper Hinklie. Augustine got takedowns in the first two periods, then added an escape and a takedown in the third for a 7-2 win making the score 15-4.
Colby Morris increased the Waynesburg lead to 18-4 with a 6-1 decision over Dakoda Rodgers.
Caleb Stephenson got a takedown at 170 pounds against the Falcons’ Austin Lembo. Lembo tied the score in the second period with a reversal. Stephenson took the lead in the third with an escape, but was penalized a point for stalling allowing Lembo to tie the match and sending it into overtime. Stephenson scored a takedown for the 5-3 win, but Waynesburg was penalized a point for unsportsmanlike conduct, leaving the score at 20-4.
“Waynesburg looked like they were a little more ready to wrestle tonight than we did,” ConnellsvilleĢƵ Jesse Swink said. ” Our guys looked a little flat. Waynesburg is a good physical team. They have a few bread and butter things they stick to, and they executed what they wanted to do tonight.”
Waynesburg put the match out of reach over the next four bouts with three pins and a forfeit.
Darnell Johnson started the run at 182 with a second-period pin over Seth Kuhns at 2:56. Noah Tustin quickly dispatched Jared Ozias at 195 with a first-period pin in 37 seconds. Spencer Lesinkski received a forfeit at 220 and Ryan Howard closed out the run for Waynesburg with a second-period pin over Cameron King at 2:28 giving the Raiders a 44-4 lead.

Cole Homet got a major decision for the Raiders at 120 pounds with a 14-6 win over Shawn Thomas, making the score 48-13. Jared Keslar closed out the match with a win for the Falcons, beating Colton Stoneking, 8-2. After a scoreless first period, Keslar got an escape, takedown, and a penalty point to hold a 4-2 lead. He added an escape, another penalty point and a takedown in the third period for the win.
“Stoneking and Keslar are both freshman, so it should be a good rivalry over the next couple of years,” Throckmorton said. “Both teams have a lot of good kids coming through their programs so we should see some good competition over the next couple of years. Right now we’ve got to turn our focus to Trinity next Wednesday. The winner of that match will win our sub-section.”
