Rohanna finishes in the money at Symetra event

Rachel Rohanna was on her way to the airport Sunday afternoon when she received word she made the cut at The Forsyth Classic presented by the Decatur Park District.

The rain-delayed second round wasn’t completed until mid-afternoon Sunday after Rohanna shot 4-over 76 for a two-round total of 1-over 145, one shot over the anticipated cut of even-par 144.

However, as second round progressed through the afternoon, so did the anticipated cut. By the time the second round came to a close, Rohanna and 79 other golfers advanced to the final round.

“I just got back to Decatur, I was already driving to airport,” Rohanna said before starting the third round. “Well, I drove 40 minutes, turned around and pulled off an exit 30 minutes from the course.”

The Waynesburg Central graduate had 17 pars and one triple bogey in the final for a 3-over 75, finishing 80th overall with a three-round total of 4-over 220. Rohanna won $507 for her efforts.

“I’ll take a cut and a smaller paycheck over a missed cut,” said Rohanna.

Jillian Hollis won the winner’s share of $30,000 with a three-round total of 13-under 203.

Rohanna started on the back nine and carded nine pars. She continued her par run with two more after making the turn, but ran into trouble on No. 3, her 12th hole with a triple bogey-7 after a poor tee shot.

“I also went for a risky second shot because I knew I had nowhere to go but up and hit it in high grass and couldn’t find it,” explained Rohanna. “If I was closer to the lead or even in the middle of the pack, I would’ve never tried hitting a high-cut 7 (wood) out of thick rough.”

Except for the wayward tee shot that led to the triple bogey, Rohanna was pleased with her play until she reached the green.

“I just struggled on these greens all week. I couldn’t ask for a better ball striking week (with the exception of one bad tee shot today). I just could not get anything to fall,” said Rohanna.

Rohanna opened the tournament with a 3-under 69 on the strength of four birdies, the only ones she had in the tournament.

She hit 9-of-14 fairways and 17-of-18 greens in regulation, and needed 30 putts in the first round. Rohanna hit 6-of-14 fairways and 16-of-18 greens in regulation in the second round, but needed 38 putts to complete the round. She cut the putts down to a tournament-low 30 in the final round, but hit only 4-of-14 fairways.

“I wanted to play today. I’m really hitting it well, just did not have a good week on the greens,” said Rohanna.

Rohanna will remain busy touring, playing in the Island Resort Championship, in Harris, Mich., this week, and then the Prasco Charity Championship in Cincinnati the following week, both Symetra Tour events.

“Then hopefully a string of LPGA events,” said Rohanna, adding, “Yes, I’m feeling way too good to slow down now!”
