Rohanna shoots 70 in opening round

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 1 min read

Rachel Rohanna had a bogey-free round Friday to open the Island Resort Championship with a 2-under 70.

The Waynesburg Central graduate started on No. 1 and posted 13 consecutive pars before scoring a birdie-3 on No. 14. After another par, Rohanna birdied No. 16, another par-4, and then closed the opening round with a pair of pars to come back in 2-under 34.

“It got really windy out there, and I made some good up-and-downs, so I’m pretty happy with 2-under,” Rohanna said of her opening 18 holes at Sweetgrass Golf Club in Harris, Mich., adding, “Especially since I went 53 holes without a birdie.

“(Both birdies) were 8-inch putts, but I was just happy to finally have one!”

Rohanna hit 13-of-14 fairways and 13-of-18 greens in regulation. She needed 29 putts to get through the round.

“Overall, I played really well. I just missed four or five greens, but almost chipped in every time,” said Rohanna.

Cydney Clanton, Malene Krolboll Hansen, Kristy McPherson and Stephanie Na share the first-round lead at 5-under 67.
