PERRYOPOLIS 鈥� Even though the WPIAL softball playoffs start next Monday, it was a playoff-like atmosphere at the Perryopolis Ball Fields.

You can make a strong case that Frazier and West Greene has been two of the most winning programs over the last four seasons. The two squads have combined to win four WPIAL titles and have racked up 29 playoffs victories over the last three seasons.

Iron sharpens iron.

On Monday, the Lady Commodores got a brilliant pitching effort from Logan Hartman and eeked out a pair of runs to secure a non-section victory over the Lady Pioneers in a postseason tune-up.

鈥淚 really liked the response of this team after a tough loss (4-2 vs. Carmichaels on April 23) a couple of weeks ago,鈥� Frazier coach Don Hartman said. 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 take anything for granted. They realized the magnitude of that loss and now we have some ladies that have a chip on their shoulders. West Greene is a great match-up because they are a complete team. This will help us out a lot.鈥�

West Greene coach Billy Simms echoed those same thoughts about the match-up, as the Lady Pioneers鈥� 13-game winning streak is over.

鈥淲e thought we needed to see some stiffer competition and luckily both teams had an open date today,鈥� Simms said. 鈥淚鈥檓 good friends with Donnie and we always try to play each other every season. Frazier is always well-coached and they have a lights-out pitcher. I feel like both teams got better today from playing each other.鈥�

Logan Hartman pitched seven innings and allowed four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks on 80 pitches.

鈥淭his was a good match-up for us,鈥� the junior right-hander said. 鈥淲e played with a lot of energy and it is always helpful to play in a close game against a good opponent. I thought our defense really held their own and it was just a beneficial experience for our team.鈥�

The Seton Hill recruit only allowed one base runner, a one-out single to Madison Lampe in the first inning, over the first four innings for the Lady Commodores (14-2).

鈥淚 was watching their swings early on in the game, and I saw that they were on my outside pitches,鈥� Logan Hartman said. 鈥淪o I decided to throw inside and I got some weak contact. I threw towards their hands and really threw my backdoor curve for a strike.鈥�

With two outs in the top of the fifth, the Lady Pioneers (14-4) threatened with two straight singles by Mackenzie Carpenter and Kylie Simms, but on the latter hit West Greene蘑菇视频 pinch runner was called out at third base to end the inning.

West Greene蘑菇视频 next scoring chance was in the top of the seventh when Jersey Wise belted a two-out, triple. However, Hartman rebounded and ended the contest with a strikeout.

鈥淟ogan is tough to face because of her speed and experience,鈥� Simms said. 鈥淚n the future, we have to learn how to adjust to that style of pitching and what pitches to swing at. We haven鈥檛 seen a pitcher like her for a while. She蘑菇视频 an ace and hard to string hits against.鈥�

After stranding two runners in the bottom of the first, Frazier capitalized on its scoring chance in the second.

With one out, Haley Somers smashed a single and then stole second. Victoria Washinski followed with a single and Somers scored after an outfield error on the play.

The Lady Commodores doubled their lead in the fifth when an RBI double by Emi Curcio scored Megan Celaschi.

鈥淲e got a couple of key hits and it was very important to grab that early lead,鈥� coach Hartman said. 鈥淟ogan pitched a good game and we were outstanding in the field. We didn鈥檛 have any letdowns in any inning. I liked the focus and the mentality of this team.鈥�

Jade Renner was tagged with the loss, going six innings and allowing two hits on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks on 96 pitches.

Both teams will end the regular season Wednesday on the road, as Frazier travels to Yough and West Greene ventures out to Bentworth.

The WPIAL softball brackets are set to be released on Thursday.
