Rohanna has rocky start in US Women’s Open
Rachel Rohanna had a tough opening nine holes Thursday in the U.S. Women’s Open and was unable to get rolling on her back nine at the Country Club of Charleston.
Rohanna posted an 8-over 79 in the first round.
The Waynesburg Central graduate started the first round on No. 10, posting six bogeys and three pars to go out in 6-over 41. Rohanna carded five bogeys on par-4s and the other on a par-3.
“Just nothing really went my way today, lots of missed greens on my front 9 in places you can’t miss,” said Rohanna. “It was a little bit of everything. Sometimes tee shots weren’t great, but yeah, mostly my second shots. I couldn’t really say my putting was ‘bad’ today because I didn’t hit anything close.”
Rohanna was even on her back nine through six holes, though. She made the turn with back-to-back bogeys, but went birdie-par-birdie-par to pull to even-par on her back nine.
However, Rohanna faltered with back-to-back bogeys to drop two more strokes to par.
“Yeah, just two bad tee shots on Nos. 7 and 8 (her 16th and 17th holes). Nothing I shouldn’t have been able to handle. I just hit my second shots in really tough spots to get up and down,” said Rohanna.聽
Rohanna closed out her first round with a par to play her back nine in 2-over 38.
The wind gained intensity in the later wave of tee times.
“Yes, for sure (the wind was a problem). I just didn’t have a good ball-striking day which was magnified in the wind,” explained Rohanna. “We had a lot of wind, but I wasn’t out there in the morning to compare.”
Mamiko Hugo, who played in the morning wave of tee times, held the lead after the first round at 6-under 65.
Rohanna plans to go out Friday and grind out 18 holes, and try to post a score in the second round.
“I mean, low scores are definitely out there. It just depends on the wind. I might have a driver change and maybe that’ll help build some confidence off the tee,” said Rohanna.
