Bethany rallies past Waynesburg University, 41-17
Waynesburg University held a 10-point lead early in the first quarter, but Bethany rallied for a 41-17 victory in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) action on Saturday at John F. Wiley Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (0-2, 0-3) took a 3-0 lead at 9:51 of the first quarter on Mike Ryhal’s 37-yard field goal before Tyler Perone scored on a one-yard run for a 10-0 advantage at 7:08 of the first.
The Bison (1-1, 1-2) took control after Perone’s score in scoring six straight touchdowns. Raekwon Wright scored on runs of 17 and six yards to cut the deficit to 14-10 at halftime after Sean Cole made two of six PATs.
Gregory Avent’s one-yard run capped a 13-play, 82-yard drive at 9:00 of the third quarter as Bethany received the second-half kickoff for a 20-10 advantage.
Wright pulled in a 27-yard touchdown reception from Carlin Bason at 3:22 of the third quarter and Bason’s 56-yard run extended the Bison’s advantage to 34-10 with 10:08 remaining in the fourth quarter. Bason capped the scoring for the visitors with a 49-yard run at 6:50 of the fourth.
Bason was 6 off 11 for 113 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, but did most of his damage with his legs in rushing for a game-high 174 yards on 19 carries (9.2 average). Wright gained 100 yards on 19 attempts (5.3 average) and he caught two passes for 36 yards.
Justin Flack scored on a 59-yard touchdown run for Waynesburg University with 4:09 left.
Connnellsville graduates Hunter and Tyler Metzger had solid games for the Yellow Jackets. Tyler made one solo stop and two assists for three total tackles, including one for a loss. Howard made two solo tackles and returned one punt for 59 yards and two kickoffs for 49 yards, with a long of 25.
Waynesburg University is at Geneva College (0-1, 0-2) next week in PAC play at 3 p.m.
