Be Local when observing National Dog Week

By Frances Borsodi Zajac, For The Greene County Messenger 3 min read

The fourth week of September is a time devoted to those canine companions who add comfort to many lives: National Dog Week.

Will Judy, a WWI veteran and ordained minister who became publisher of Dog World magazine, established the observance in 1928. He wanted to promote the use of service and therapy dogs and for people to treat dogs with kindness and respect.

Be Local means celebrating this week by taking special care of pets and reaching out to shelters that help dogs without homes.

Dogs, like cats, come to shelters for a variety of reasons: Some are dropped off when the owner can no longer keep a pet. Some are found free roaming. Some animals have been abused.

For people who are interested in adopting an animal from a shelter, it’s best to check with a particular shelter to see what their procedures are.

Jane Gapen, director, explained the public can visit the Humane Society of Greene County in Waynesburg and receive help in picking out a pet best suited for them.

“We have a meet and greet room where you can spend time alone in a quiet room,” said Gapen, of the animal and those wanting to adopt.

Anyone wanting to move forward with an adoption needs to fill out an application and provide references that will be reviewed.

Those who can’t adopt may be interested in volunteering with shelters. Most offer a number of ways to help.

Gapen said the Waynesburg shelter has a program called Dog Heroes: “If there’s a dog you love but can’t adopt, you are the dog’s hero until he gets a home.”

Dog Heroes can spend time with the dogs and walk them.

“We’re really big on exercise – getting the animals out every day,” said Gapen.

Dog Heroes have an opportunity get to know that animal: what makes him or her unique.

The director noted, “A woman went home and made the cutest sign for the animal and listed all the wonderful things about him. We put it on the cage, and he was adopted quickly.”

People can also make donations to shelters, such as pet food, laundry and dish washing detergent or used towels, washcloths and sheets. Donors should check with shelters to see what brands they prefer.

People who are already dog owners can celebrate this week by treating that special pet in their lives: take an extra long walk, buy a new toy or treat, and make sure to visit a veterinarian for health care.

Traditionally known as man’s best friend, what makes dogs so special?

“Because they love you unconditionally. They love you more than you love yourself,” said Gapen. “Cats are to be admired. They’re all beautiful. But dogs love you no matter what.”
