UMWA to host Robena Mine memorial service on Dec. 6
The 60th anniversary of the Robena Mine disaster will be commemorated on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at the Robena Monument on Route 21.
Thirty-seven miners died on Dec. 6, 1962, when an underground explosion occurred in the Frosty Run Shaft. There were 170 men in the Carmichaels mine at the time.
United Mine Workers of America Local Union 1980 and UMWA District 2 will host the 11 a.m. service.
The keynote speaker is Cecil Robert, UMWA president. Brian Sanson, secretary-treasurer of UMWA, will also speak.
The public is invited to attend.
