Greene County to continue mosquito surveillance through October (copy)

1 min read

The Greene County Conservation District will continue its mosquito surveillance through October.

Mosquito traps are set weekly in 12 areas throughout the county to survey the mosquito population and test for West Nile Virus (WNV) and other mosquito-borne diseases. Through Sept. 7, 274 samples containing 10,005 mosquitoes were sent to the state Department of Environmental Protection for testing, yielding three mosquito samples that tested positive for WNV. That is a 1.09% WNV mosquito positive rate, which is equivalent with the state and national average of 1%.

The three mosquito samples that tested positive for WNV were collected in Waynesburg, Perry Township, and Greensboro. For the past five years, Greene County has averaged three positive samples per year. The year with the highest number of WNV mosquito samples on record was 2018, when 32 positive samples were collected in Greene County.
