Once a Maple…Always a Maple.”

This is how school officials at Mapletown Junior/Senior High School describe the pride of their students. And, it’s this pride and camaraderie that have helped make the school a success for the past 100 years.

Mapletown Junior/Senior High School hits the centenarian mark this year, and the district has plans to celebrate it on May 5. It will be a free event and includes entertainment, door prizes, student-led tours and commemorative T-shirts for the first 100 guests.

“Too often we get so caught up with looking into the future that we forget the importance of our past, so the district believes it is important to celebrate past accomplishments and understand their impact on our lives today,” said Scott E Sinn, assistant to the superintendent/director of curriculum at Southeastern Greene School District.

There are currently 246 students at Mapletown Junior/Senior High School grades 7-12. Sinn said this number has fluctuated up and down a bit over the last few years but is smaller class enrollment compared to those years when coal production was a booming business in the district.

“No matter the class size, teachers and staff at Mapletown continue to do their best to prepare each and every child to succeed in school and in the future,” Sinn said.

Students at Mapletown Junior/Senior High School continue with this academic success by recently being named by the National Math & Science Initiative as one of the top AP academic achieving schools in the country.

“Students at SEG continue to meet the district’s and their own high expectations. Year after year, students at Bobtown Elementary School continue to achieve some of the highest state testing scores in the area with science scores topping most other districts in the entire state,” Sinn said.

According to Sinn, within the last 10 years, Mapletown has implemented six new Advanced Placement courses as well as Dual Enrollment courses through Carlow University and Pierpont Community & Technology College. The district also continues to offer clubs and activities such as band, chorus, athletics, Academic League, Envirothon, National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Future Teachers of America, Interact Club and most recently a new Esports club which competes against students throughout the country.

SEG has many partnerships with other organizations that offer opportunities to students, such as Pittsburgh Center for Arts and Media, Rural Arts Collaborative, Waynesburg University, Greene County Career & Technology Center, Junior Achievement, Cornerstone Care and the Honey Program, as well as others, Sinn said.

And although Mapletown has one of the smallest enrollments of students who participate in team sports, the Mapletown Varsity Football Team went undefeated during the 2022-23 school year and were named the Tri-County South Champions.

As the students continue to succeed, school officials try to make sure they have an updated building in which to learn.

The district recently installed new doors on all of the classrooms and are in the process of installing new doors on all of the elementary classrooms, according to Sinn.

“Each year the district assesses what improvements might best benefit the district and its students. Classrooms are constantly being updated with new technology and unique opportunities for students,” Sinn said.

He added, “Southeastern Greene is a fabulous district to attend. Students receive an education from one of the highest academic ranked performing elementary schools in the area and then attend Mapletown where students can explore a wide range of career choices whether it be college bound, a skilled trade, military pursuit, or other continued educational interest. Students have many opportunities to be difference makers in their school and their community.”

The district currently has 322 students at Bobtown Elementary School (K-6) resulting in a total of 568 district students. The superintendent of schools is Richard Pekar.

District officials will open the doors of Mapletown Junior/Senior High School from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, and provide student tours of the building while pointing out the many renovations and advancements throughout the years, Sinn said.

Guests will have the opportunity to see the newly installed Wall of Achievement that will allow them to browse old yearbooks, former athletic teams, former military personnel, past valedictorians and salutatorians, as well as browse many other categories.

Guests will also have an opportunity to visit the coffee shop and see student work that depicts the 100-year celebration of the building as well as visit specific advancements that have been made to classrooms. Snacks will be available with local entertainment provided.

There will also be a new student mural on display in the main hall that depicts the importance of community and school coming together over the past 100 years.

“When we think of the number of students who walked the halls of Mapletown Junior/Senior High School, we get an overwhelming sense of pride. SEG students have always understood the importance of representing their school and community. As parents, grandparents and others come back to Mapletown, it’s amazing how so many say they feel like they have never left.

“Once a Maple … Always a Maple,” Sinn said.

And it’s that sense of belonging that cements the school’s place in the community.
