Local programs receive state Environmental Education Grant
Programs in Washington, Fayette and Greene counties received state grants to support environmental education and stewardship across Pennsylvania.
Awarded by the state Department of Environmental Protection, the Environmental Education Grants program prioritizes proposals that engage youth or adults who live, work, or attend school in environmental justice areas.
Local awards include:
$30,000 to California Area School District in Washington County for a “Bringing Biology to Life” project, which creates an environmental education program at the high school;
$30,000 to Mountain Watershed Association to conduct “Expanding Outdoor Education in the Youghiogheny River Watershed” in Fayette, Somerset, and Westmoreland counties Programming includes monthly afterschool and community-based programs, professional development training, two high school service-learning field trips;
$27,060 to Pennsylvania Resources Council Inc. for hosting “Stormwater Equity: Increasing Access to Rain Barrels for Overburdened Communities” in Allegheny, Fayette, and Delaware counties. The project will host eight education workshops focused on watershed protection, stormwater management, and environmental literacy.
