Local roundup: Lady Raiders rolls past Carmichaels

Peyton Cowell recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as Waynesburg Central rolled past visiting Carmichaels, 48-19, in non-section girls basketball action Monday night.

Avery Davis scored a game-high 14 points for the Lady Raiders (2-1) who jumped out to a 25-0 lead in the first quarter.

Ke’Lani Chun had six points for the Lady Mikes (0-4).

Brownsville 50, Jefferson-Morgan 20 – Skyler Gates scored 22 points as the Lady Falcons took charge with a 19-3 edge in the second quarter on the way to a non-section victory over the visiting Lady Rockets.

Brownsville (2-1) held an 18-12 lead after the first quarter before extending its advantage to 37-15 by halftime.

Ava Clark had 18 points for the Lady Falcons.

Leighana Gooden drained five 3-pointers to score 15 points for Jefferson-Morgan (0-5).

Boys basketball

Steel Valley 62, Waynesburg Central 60 (OT) – Nate Yuhas scored 25 points and the Ironmen outscored the host Raiders 8-6 in overtime to pull out a non-section win.

Cole Headlee tallied 23 points and five assists for Waynesburg (0-3) which also got 16 points from Alex VanSickle, 12 points from Dane Woods and 15 rebounds from Alex Eck.

Rashun Hough and Jaeshawn Carson added 15 and 12 points for Steel Valley (1-6)

Friday, Dec. 6

Union 51, Jefferson-Morgan 43 – Lucas Stanley scored 22 points and the Scotties fought off the Rockets for a boys basketball win at the Fort Cherry tournament.

After a 13-13 tie in the first quarter Union took a 32-29 halftime advantage and held a 41-35 lead after three.

Maddox Thompson had 12 points for Union (3-0).

John Woodward and Dayten topped J-M (1-1) in scoring with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Washington 60, Waynesburg Central 45 – The host Prexies shot out to a 19-4 lead in the first quarter on their way to a non-section win over the Raiders.

Tristan Reed topped Washington (2-1) in scoring with 23 points and was followed by Tayonne France (14) and Will Callan (13).

Cole Headlee scored 14 points for Waynesburg (0-2) which also got 11 points from Alex VanSickle and 10 rebounds from Alex Eck.

Bentworth 52, Carmichaels 30 – The Bearcats lept out to a 17-8 lead in the first quarter and pulled away from there for a non-section win at Carmichaels.

Ben Hays led all scorers with 21 points for (2-1).

Robbie Wilson-Jones tossed in 12 points for Carmichaels (0-2).

Avella 66, Mapletown 43 – The Eagles outscored the host Maples 24-8 in the second quarter to take control on their way to a non-section win.

Bryce Wright and Brayden Fuller led the way for Avella (2-2) with 18 and 16 points.

Tyler Howard scored 13 for Mapletown (0-2) and Lucas Stevenson followed with 10.

McGuffey 51, West Greene 33 – Ayden Cunningham’s 26 points keyed the Highlanders’ non-section win at West Greene.

Eric Jacob added 11 points for McGuffey (3-0). Darren Knight paced the Pioneers (1-1) with 12 points.

Girls basketball

West Greene 45, McGuffey 39 – Kendra Tharp scored 16 points and the Class A Lady Pioneer hung on after building a 13-point lead for a non-section victory over Class AAA McGuffey.

The Lady Highlanders led 14-11 after the first quarter but West Greene outscored the visitors 28-12 over the middle two frames to go up 39-26. McGuffey held a 13-6 edge in the fourth quarter.

Madelyn Roberts added 12 points for the Lady Pioneers (4-0).

Taylor Schumacher scored a game-high 19 points for the Lady Highlanders (3-1).

Avella 63, Jefferson-Morgan 45 – Ava Frank (26) and Syd Strope (21) combined for 47 points in the Lady Eagles’ non-section win over the host Lady Rockets.

Bailey Cervone and Ava Wood each tallied 11 points for J-M (0-4) which also got 10 points from Leighana Gooden.

Wednesday, Dec. 4

Waynesburg 36, Jefferson-Morgan 34 – The Bob Stephenson-era for the Raiders began in a non-section wrestling victory over the Rockets in a Greene-County showdown at Waynesburg Central High School.

The Raiders’ Brock Evans won a 4-3 decision over Alex Palko at 160 pounds and teammate Ky-Mani Sumpter earned an 11-8 victory at 172 to increase Waynesburg’s lead to 24-16 with five weights remaining.

Jacob Stephenson’s fall in 37 seconds at 189 and Roan Tustin’s forfeit at 215 clinched the dual meet for the Raiders (1-0).

Jefferson-Morgan’s Landon Heath won by fall in 48 seconds at 285 before the Rockets’ Brayden Hanning (107) and Caleb Dulaney (114) won by forfeit.

Waynesburg’s Floyd Huff (121), Jesse Huff (127) and Luke Rush (139) won by fall.

The Rockets’ James Dulaney earned a 14-6 major decision at 133. Teammates Johnny Gilbert (145) and Dominic Sowden (152) recorded pins in the team’s opener.

Avella 54, West Greene 24 — Six falls and three forfeits led the Eagles to a non-section victory at West Greene.

Avella (1-0) was out of the WPIAL team competition, but the Eagles are back and looking to make a run for it in Class 2A Section 2.

The Pioneers’ Noah Collins (121), Levi Yeater (152) and Colin Whyte (285) recorded falls. Teammate Reece Tharp received a forfeit at 172.

The Eagles received forfeits at 114, 133 and 139.

Girls basketball

Mapletown 37, Jefferson-Morgan 25 – Nicole Barerra recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds and also had two steals and a blocked shot as the Lady Maples defeated the host Lady Rockets in a non-section game.Makenna Lotspeich added 12 points and four steals for Mapletown (2-2) which also got 10 rebounds from Sophia Jennings and nine points and six steals from Helena Cumpston.

The Lady Maples led 9-3, 19-16 and 25-20 at the quarter breaks before pulling away with a 12-5 advantage in the final frame.

Leighana Gooden led Jefferson-Morgan (0-3) with eight points.

Waynesburg Central 62, Frazier 52 – Peyton Cowell scored 21 points and the Lady Raiders rode a big third quarter to a non-section win over the host Lady Commodores.

Waynesburg (1-1) led 18-14 after the first quarter and 29-28 at halftime before surging to a 48-33 advantage in the third and stayed in control from there.

Avery Davis tallied 14 points and Mya Smith had 11 for the Lady Raiders.

Allie Yauch paced Frazier (0-2) with 16 points and Clea Bozek chipped in with 10.

Avella 54, Carmichaels 25 – Ava Frank led a trio of Lady Eagles in double figures with 17 points in a non-section victory over the visiting Lady Mikes.

Sydney Strope followed with 13 points and Haleigh Rush added 10 for Avella (2-1).

Joselyn Carter had seven points for Carmichaels (0-3).

Men’s basketball

Chatham 64, Waynesburg 60 – The Yellow Jackets’ winning streak ended at four after a tough battle with the first-place Cougars in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

PJ Suggs led Waynesburg (2-2, 3-5) with 17 points and also had five rebounds and three assists. Antone Baker contributed 13 points and three steals and Jalen Goins had 10 points.

Diaun Pinkett had 22 points for the Cougars.

Waynesburg used a 16-2 run to take a 47-39 lead with just under 13 minutes left but Chatham (5-0, 7-1) fought back to pull out the win.

Women’s basketball

Chatham 71, Waynesburg 54 – The Cougars took control by out-scoring the visiting Yellow Jackets 25-9 in the third quarter on their way to a Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory.

Julz Mohrbacher led Waynesburg (0-4, 4-4) with 15 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Mia Henkins added 13 points and seven boards and Tori Wesolowski had eight points and four rebounds.

Alyssa Laukus scored 19 points for Chatham (2-2, 4-3) and was followed by Ashlie Louden (18) and Hannah Chenault (17).

Tuesday, Dec. 3

West Greene 50, Waynesburg 35 – Kendra Tharp scored 16 points as the Lady Pioneers improved to 3-0 with a non-section girls basketball victory over the host Lady Raiders.

West Greene took a 17-7 lead in the first quarter and extended its advantage to 33-20 by halftime. Waynesburg Central used a 10-5 edge in the third quarter to get within 38-30 but the Lady Pioneers pulled away in the final frame.

Marissa Tharp and Madelyn Roberts each tallied 11 points for West Greene.

Avery Davis racked up a game-high 21 points for Waynesburg (0-1).

Boys basketball

West Greene 57, Waynesburg Central 33 – Lane Allison poured in a game-high 26 points as West Greene stormed back in the fourth quarter to overtake and pull away from host Waynesburg Central in a non-section game that was the season opener for both teams.

The Raiders (0-1) led 7-5, 22-21 and 33-30 at the quarter breaks before the Pioneers (1-0) exploded for 27 points in the final frame.

Darren Knight followed Allison with 12 points for West Greene.

Dane Woods led Waynesburg with 11 points.

Jefferson-Morgan 47, Avella 43 – The Rockets outscored the host Eagles 13-5 in the fourth quarter to pull out a non-section victory in their season opener..

Houston Guesman and Jeremiah Robertson scored 11 points apiece to lead the way for J-M (1-0).

Eli Maidment and Bryce Wright both tallied 10 points for Avella (1-2) which led 21-16 at halftime and 38-34 after three quarters.

Frazier 57, Carmichaels 32 – Dalian McManus rang up 32 points and the host Commodores cruised to a non-section win over the Mikes.

Frazier jumped out to a 19-7 lead in the opening quarter and never looked back. The Commodores led 33-16 at halftime and 53-22 after three quarters.

Kolby Stewart had 11 points for Frazier (1-2).

Robbie Wilson-Jones tossed in 12 points for Carmichaels (0-1).
