Local roundup: Pioneers hold off Mikes for important section win

West Greene scored all of its runs in the third inning and pitchers Darren Knight and Lane Allison made it stand up as the Pioneers fended off visiting Carmichaels, 3-2, for a key Section 1-A baseball victory Monday.

The two were scheduled to play again Tuesday in Carmichaels with the winner clinching at least a share of second place while also keeping their section title hopes alive.

Johnny Lampe hit an RBI single in the third inning that gave West Greene (6-3, 9-4) a 2-1 lead and a Carmichaels error on the play allowed another run to score. That proved to be important when Carmichaels (6-3, 9-3) pushed across a run in the seventh on a one-out single by Mason Lapana, who had two RBIs.

Allison, who earned a save, got a strikeout and flyout to end the game as the Mikes stranded the tying run at third base. Winning pitcher Knight gave up two runs in 6 1/3 innings with six strikeouts.

Fort Cherry 16, Mapletown 3 – Fort Cherry took advantage of 11 errors in rolling past the host Maples as the Rangers stayed on pace to claim the Section 1-A title.

Fort Cherry (7-2, 9-2) can clinch sole possession of first place with another win over Mapletown (0-9, 2-11) and a two-game sweep of Jefferson-Morgan.

Matt Sieg hit a solo home run and Ben Demascal had a double and four RBIs to lead the Rangers’ 13-hit attack. Winning pitcher Colton Temple allowed three unearned runs and struck out nine.

Mapletown remains winless in the section.

Southmoreland 6, Jefferson-Morgan 4 – Jake Govern had two hits and three RBIs and Brenden Geho drew a tiebreaking bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning, sending the Scotties to a non-section win over host Jefferson-Morgan.

The score was tied 4-4 entering the fifth but Geho’s walk and an RBI single by Tyler Kolonosky gave the Scotties a 6-4 lead.

Three Southmoreland pitchers held J-M (6-7) scoreless over the final five innings.

Deakyn Dehoet, Jaymison Robinson and Joey Bair doubled for the Rockets.

Kadin Keefer hit a pair of doubles for the Scotties (3-10).

Softball

Carmichaels 2, West Grene 0 — Bailey Barnyak fired a two-hit shutout and Sydney Miller hit an RBI double as the Lady Mikes edged the host Lady Pioneers in a Section 2-A game.

Barnyak, who struck out six, had a perfect game for 5â…“ innings for Carmichaels (7-1, 10-2) before allowing a single to Ella Scott.

Payton Gilbert pitched well in defeat for West Greene (6-4, 7-6), surrendering just one earned run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings, and had the only other hit off Barnyak.

Seton LaSalle 2, Waynesburg Central 1 — Kiara Cerminara hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Gianna Ferrieri pitched a two-hitter as the Lady Rebels edged the visiting Lady Raiders in a Section 4-AAA game.

There were only four hits in the game with Cerminara’s the most important. Waynesburg pitcher Gina Tedrow matched Ferrieri by throwing a two-hitter. She struck out 11.

Dani Stockdale had a double for Waynesburg (4-6, 6-10).

Chartiers-Houston 18, Mapletown 0 — Ella Richey went 4-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs, powering the Section 2-A leading Lady Bucs to an 18-0 win over the host Lady Maples in four innings.

Lauren Rush also hit a home run for C-H (9-0, 11-1). She went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Richey and Rush also had a double, as did Zaylee Fonner. The Bucs scored nine runs in the first inning.

Friday, April 26

Carmichaels 7, Avella 2 – The Lady Mikes scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a Section 2-A home softball victory over the Lady Eagles (0-10, 3-12).

Sydney Miller allowed six hits, walked one and struck out seven for the win.

Carys McConnell led the Lady Mikes (7-1, 10-2) with a home run, single and four RBI. Kaitlyn Waggett finished with a double, single and two runs scored. Payton Plavi contributed two hits.

Baseball

Jefferson-Morgan 4, California 0 – The Rockets scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning for a Section 1-A victory over visiting California.

Deakyn Dehoet scored the first run of the game in the third inning when he led off with a single, stole second and third, and scored on Brayden Ellsworth’s sacrifice fly.

The inning continued when Brock Bayles doubled with two outs and John Woodward was safe on an infield error. Both scored on Brenton Barnhart’s double.

Jefferson-Morgan (4-6, 6-6) added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Woodward started and went 5.1 innings for the win. He allowed two hits, walked three and struck out 11. Bayles picked up the final five outs for the save after striking out three, walking one and allowing one hit.

Chase Cicchitto doubled for the Trojans.

Carmichaels 11, Chartiers-Houston 9 – Liam Lohr had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and knocked in three runs as the visiting Mikes rallied to defeat the Buc in a non-section clash.

Dom Colarusso tripled for Carmichaels (9-2) and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run after the Mikes fought back from an 8-4 deficit to tie it.

Colin Andrews allowed one run in 2 â…“ innings to earn the win in relief.

Luke Camden drove in three runs for C-H (6-7).

Thursday, April 25

Chartiers-Houston 14, West Greene 4 – Meadow Ferri struck out 18 and Ella Richey belted two home runs in the Lady Bucs’ Section 2-A softball home win.

Kendra Tharp doubled and had an RBI for the Lady Pioneers (6-3, 7-5). West Greene scored single runs in the top of the first and sixth innings, and two in the fourth inning.

Richey hit a two-run home run in the top of the third inning and a solo shot in the sixth inning. Lauren Rush hit a solo home run in the first inning.

Chartiers-Houston invoked the mercy rule with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game ended on Zaylee Fonner’s 3-run home run. Ferri and Seanna Riggle both drove in two runs.

Jefferson-Morgan 11, Mapletown 1 – The Lady Rockets scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to invoke the mercy rule for a Section 2-A home win.

Winning pitcher Kallyn Novak allowed two hits, struck out five and didn’t walk a batter. Emilee Bazzoli smacked a home run and Kayla Larkin doubled.

Baseball

Waynesburg Central 3, West Greene 2 – Austin Surber finished with 12 strikeouts and Alex VanSickle struck out the side in the seventh inning in the Raiders’ non-section victory.

VanSickle also had two singles for Waynesburg (10-0).

Johnny Lampe and Dylan Hughes both had an RBI for the Pioneers (8-4).

Wednesday, April 24

West Greene 6, Jefferson-Morgan 4 — Winning pitcher Payton Gilbert drove in the eventual winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning in the Lady Pioneers’ Section 2-A softball home win.

Gilbert walked two and struck out two, and had two singles and two runs scored. Emmaline Beazell went 3-for-4 and Kendra Tharp doubled for West Greene (6-2, 7-4).

Kayla Larkin and Brooklynne Sndyer both hit run-scoring doubles for the Lady Rockets (4-3, 4-5).

Carmichaels 18, California 2 — Carys McConnell hit a home run and drove in five runs to lead the Lady Mikes to a Section 2-A road victory.

Bailey Barnyak struck out 10 and scattered three hits, and finished with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored for Carmichaels (5-1, 8-2). Kaitlyn Waggett finished with four singles and scored four runs, and Ali Jacobs was a home run away from hitting for the cycle.

Losing pitcher Kera Urick drove in both runs for the Lady Trojans (1-8, 1-10).

South Park 2, Waynesburg Central 0 — The Lady Raiders were only able to muster two hits off Sydney Sekely in a Section 4-AAA loss to the Lady Eagles.

Gina Tedrow also had a strong outing for Waynesburg (4-4, 6-8) with a one-hitter and 16 strikeouts.

South Park (7-0, 11-1) scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning for the win.

Tuesday, April 23

Waynesburg Central 7, Southmoreland 0 – The Raiders’ Trenton Zupper and Austin Surber combined on a no-hitter in a Section 4-AAA victory over Southmoreland.

Zupper struck out six in 5.2 innings and Surber struck out three in 1.1 innings for the Raiders (8-0, 10-0). Kory Taylor had three RBI in the win.

Southmoreland goes to 2-8 in the section and 2-10 overall.

Carmichaels 6, Avella 2 – Carmichaels pulled away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a Section 1-A victory over visiting Avella.

Avella (6-3, 7-3) pulled into a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Mikes rallied for a tie in the bottom of the inning.

Carmichaels (6-2, 8-2) regained the lead with a solo run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Colin Andrews doubled and drove in a run for the Mikes. Mason Lapana finished with two hits and two RBI. Liam Lohr also drove in two runs.

Jefferson-Morgan 10, Mapletown 0 – Brayden Ellsworth and Brenton Barnhart both drove in three runs to lead the Rockets to a Section 1-A home victory.

The Rockets (3-6, 5-6) led 1-0 after the first inning, 6-0 after three innings and 10-0 through four innings.

John Woodward struck out seven and allowed one hit in four innings for the win. He also doubled. Brock Bayles struck out two and allowed one hit in the fifth inning.

Jaymison Robinson went 3-for-3, scored three runs and stole two bases for the Rockets.

West Greene 8, Fort Cherry 7 – Winning pitcher Darren Knight belted a home run and Johnny Lampe tripled for the Pioneers in a Section 1-A win against the Rangers.

Lane Allison drove in two runs for West Greene (5-3, 6-3). Fort Cherry is 6-2 in the section and 8-2 overall.

Baseball

McGuffey 5, Waynesburg Central 2 – Gina Tedrow struck out 12 for the Lady Raiders (4-3, 6-7) in a Section 4-AAA loss to McGuffey (4-2, 7-3).
