Local roundup: Lady Raiders sweep away Bentworth in volleyball

Ani Cree totaled 10 kills, 8 digs, 3 aces and 2 blocks as Waynesburg Central swept past visiting Bentworth, 3-0, in a Section 3-AA girls volleyball match on Thursday.

The Lady Raiders (2-0, 3-0) won by scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-14.

Waynesburg also had contributions from Emily Rafferty (9 kills), Railey Bochna (6 kills, 4 digs, 5 aces), Bailey Rafferty (7 digs, 19 assists), and Gina Tedrow (7 assists, 4 aces).

Bentworth was led by Chelsea Dindal (3 kills, 4 aces), Nora Lindsey (3 kills), Olivia Telegraphis (10 digs), and Zoie McDonald (8 assists).

Southmoreland 3, Carmichaels 1 – The Lady Mikes stayed alive by taking the third set, but the home team won the fourth for the victory.

Southmoreland won the first two sets, 25-12 and 25-20. Carmichaels won the third set, 25-16, to stay alive, but the Lady Scots closed out the victory with a 25-14 win in the fourth set.

Southmoreland was led by: Zoey Welling (21 assists, 8 digs, 3 aces), Riley Puckey (14 assists, 4 kills, 4 digs, 4 aces), Taylor Doppelheuer (18 kills, 2 blocks), Makayla Etling (6 kills, 5 digs); Morgan Riddle (4 kills), and Ainsley Martin (32 digs).

Boys golf

Beth-Center 217, Carmichaels 219 – The Bulldogs upended visiting Carmichaels for a Section 3-AA win at Chippewa Golf Course.

Luke Amon and Parker Amos shared team scoring honors for Beth-Center (2-8, 2-8) with 5-over 40. Karson Keys shot 41. Jordan Lowman (46) and Evan Lowman (50) closed out the scoring.

Zach Murphy was medalist for the Mikes (5-3, 5-4) with 4-over 39. Nathan Dursa (43), Connor Lapana (42), Aydan Bate (48), and Eli Hastings (47) closed out the scoring.

McGuffey 189, Waynesburg Central 189 – First place in Section 3-AA was on the line when the Raiders hosted the Highlanders at Rohanna’s Golf Course, and the match needed a playoff hole to decide the outcome.

McGuffey won the playoff, 17-21, to improve to 8-0 in the section and 12-1 overall. Waynesburg Central slips to 6-2 in the section and 8-2 overall.

The Raiders’ Jarett Tretinik shared medalist honors with 3-over 36. Dom Benamati and Aidan Titus both finished with 37. Joe Kirsch carded 39 and Chase Phillips closed out the scoring with 43.

McGuffey’s Logan Crowe and Brady Wagner both shot 36.

Tuesday, Sept. 3

Waynesburg Central 211, Bentworth 224 – The Raiders kept their Section 3-AA playoff hopes alive with a boys golf victory against Bentworth at Chippewa Golf Course.

Chase Phillips led the way for the Raiders with the medalist round of 3-over 38. Dom Benamati shot 41. Joe Kirsch and Jarett Tretinik both finished with 43, and Aiden Titus closed out the scoring with 46.

Trent Wolpink was the low man for the Bearcats (1-8, 1-10) with 41. Wyatt Snyder (42), Craig McDonald (46), Sam Wade (47), and Blake Reed (48) rounded out the scoring.

Jefferson-Morgan 220, Beth-Center 248; Chartiers-Houston 213, Jefferson-Morgan 220; Chartiers-Houston 213, Beth-Center 248 – The Rockets split a pair of home matches at Greene County Country Club.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Clay Wilson was the low man in the Section 3-AA win against the Bulldogs with 4-over 40. Urijah Teasdale (43), Brendan Wood (45), Brayden Ellsworth (46), and Jack Shaffer (46) also counted in the final score for Jefferson-Morgan (6-3, 7-6).

Luke Amon was the low man for Beth-Center (1-6, 1-8) with 44.

Chartiers-Houston’s JoJo Jakulski was medalist with 3-over 39.

Carmichaels 224, Brownsville 294 – The Mikes picked up a Section 3-AA victory against the Falcons at Carmichaels Golf Club.

Eli Hastings led the way for Carmichaels (5-2, 5-3) with 4-over 41. Nathan Dursa (46), Connor Lapana (43), Zach Murphy (49), and Aydan Bate (45) also counted in the final score.

Benjamin Vojacek (51), Dominic Capan (56), Ava Rohland (54), Elizabeth McCune (66), and Tyler Glumac (67) had scoring rounds for Brownsville (0-7, 0-7).

Girls soccer

Bentworth 2, Waynesburg Central 1 – The Lady Bearcats held on for a Section 1-A home win after leading 2-0 at halftime.

Bella Moyer and Brielle Dillon scored for Bentworth in the first half.

Girls volleyball

Waynesburg Central 3, Charleroi 0 – The Lady Raiders didn’t drop a set for a Section 3-AA road victory.

Waynesburg secured the victory by the scores, 25-22, 25-21, 25-19.

The Lady Raiders’ Emily Rafferty (9 digs, 10 kills, 7 aces), Bailey Rafferty (9 digs, 16 assists, 2 aces), and Ani Cree (9 digs, 9 kills, 2 aces) all had all-around performances in the win. Railey Bochna (2 blocks), Harper Grimes (2 blocks), Leila McCollum (9 digs, 3 aces), and Chatham Knight (3 aces) also helped in the win.

Jefferson-Morgan 3, Geibel Catholic 0 – The Lady Rockets swept to a non-section victory over Geibel Catholic.

Emilee Bazzoli led Jefferson-Morgan (2-2) with 13 digs. Alisa Long also had a strong game with 10 digs and six kills. Alaina McCollum and Leighana Gooden both finished with nine assists.

Boys soccer

Beth-Center 3, Waynesburg Central 0 – Nekoda Bundy netted two goals to lead the Bulldogs’ to a non-section road victory.

Rylan Piper also scored for Beth-Center (2-0-1). Goalkeeper Luke Amon preserved the shutout.
