Local roundup: Tedrow strikes out 19 as Lady Raiders beat Bentworth

Gina Tedrow fired a three-hitter with 19 strikeouts as Waynesburg Central triumphed over host Bentworth, 3-1, in a Section 4-2A softball battle Monday.

Tedrow, who walked five, got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the sixth inning with consecutive strikeouts as Waynesburg improved to 3-1 in the section and 6-4 overall.

Avery Davis, Bre Kerr and Kalee Piper each had a single and an RBI for the Lady Raiders who took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning and tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.

Bentworth’s only hits were singles by Sofia Guassa, Hailey Tatar and Kyleigh Glaze. Kayla O’Dell scored the lone run for the Lady Bearcats (2-3, 5-6) on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.

Losing pitcher Willow Eckels allowed one earned run on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Thursday, April 17

Belle Vernon 8, Waynesburg Central 5 — The Raiders battled but lost their first game of the season in non-secton baseball play to the Leopards at Meadowlark Park.

Waynesburg Central (6-0, 10-1) had a 4-1 lead after two innings, but Belle Vernon (6-2, 9-2) scored three in the top of the third to tie the game at 4-4 before taking an 8-4 advantage with four in the top of the fifth frame. The Raiders scored one run in the bottom of the seventh.

Ian Porter earned the win in relief after allowing one earned run on three hits in 5â…“ innings pitched. He had five strikeouts and no walks.

Belle Vernon’s Connor Bergman had two doubles and scored two runs.

Waynesburg Central’s Alex VanSickle and Derek Turcheck doubled and had multiple hits, with Turcheck’s three and VanSickle’s two.

Turcheck had three RBIs.

Jeannette 2, Carmichaels 0 — The Jayhawks scored one run apiece in the fourth and fifth innings and Wyatt Schaeffer pitched a five-hit shutout in a Section 1-1A triumph over the Mikes.

Schaeffer struck out two and walked one in seven innings.

Carmichaels’ Colin Andrews allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits over 4â…” innings. He struck out six and walked two.

The Mikes fell to 5-3 in section play and 6-4 overall.

Wednesday, April 16

Carmicaels 3, Jefferson-Morgan 2 – Bailey Barnyak threw a four-hitter and struck out 12, including the final two batters with the tying run on second base, as Carmichaels fended off visiting Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 2-A battle.

The unbeaten Lady Mikes (4-0, 8-0) built a 3-0 lead and hung on from there.

Barnyak hit a run-scoring single in the first inning and Carmichaels made it 2-0 in the third when Kaitlyn Waggett tripled and scored on a squeeze bunt by Ashton Batis. Carys McConnell drove in what proved to be the winning run for the Lady Mikes in the fifth when she followed a double by Batis with a run-scoring single.

The Lady Rockets (2-2, 5-3) cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth when Gabby Marmie and Ashlynn Snyder both singled and Brooklynne Snyder hit a two-run double.

Jefferson-Morgan threatened in the seventh when Ava Wood reached on an error and was bunted to second by Addyson Teagarden, but Barnyak closed out the game with two strikeouts.

Marmie had two hits, including a double, for J-M. Losing pitcher Emilee Bazzoli allowed five hits and four walks with 11 strikeouts.

Ke’Lani Chun doubled for Carmichaels. Barnyak gave up four hits and no walks.

West Greene 12, Avella 1 – Payton Gilbert pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and had two hits and two RBIs as the Lady Pioneers rolled past the host Lady Eagles in a six-inning Section 2-A game.

Marissa Tharp doubled, singled and knocked in three runs, Khyler Davis had three hits and Kendra Tharp doubled for West Greene (5-1, 10-1) which also got two hits apiece from Kylee Davis, Sammi Zimmerman and Katie Brudnock.

Ginny Smith hit a double for Avella (0-4, 1-8). Emily Buel took the loss.

Beth-Center 9, Mapletown 5 – Allison Lynch hit a triple and knocked in four runs as the Lady Bulldogs (2-3, 2-7) triumphed over the Lady Maples in a Section 2-A game.

Makenna Lotspeich had a triple and an RBI for Mapletown (1-4, 3-7).

Tuesday, April 15

Carmicahels 3, Greensburgh Central Catholic 1 – Colin Andrews hit a game-tying home run and Jordan Davis delivered a go-ahead run-scoring single in a two-run fifth inning that propelled Carmichaels past visiting Greensburg Central Catholic in Section 1-A action.

It was the Centurions (4-1, 6-2) first section loss of the season.

GCC led 1-0 until Andrews’ solo home run leading off the fifth made it 1-1.

Ryder Krieg reached on a two-out single, stole second and scored on Davis’ hit to put the Mikes ahead 2-1. Krieg gave Carmichaels an insurance run in the sixth when he drew a bases-loaded walk.

Winning pitcher Jas Zdravdky pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and six walks with six strikeouts.

Andrews also doubled for the Mikes (5-2, 6-3) and Robbie Wilson-Jones also doubled.

Losing pitcher Alec Martin gave up two runs on five hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts.

Waynesburg Central 14, Seton LaSalle 5 – Jake Stephenson was 4 for 5 and CJ Corwin, Grant Pack and Ethan Kiger had three RBIs apiece as the Raiders remained unbeaten with a Section 4-3A win over the Rebels (4-3, 5-5).

Derek Turcheck added a double for Waynesburg (6-0, 10-0) and winning pitcher Austin Surber surrendered two earned runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in four innings. Alex VanSickle gave up one earned run with six strikeouts in three innings of relief to earn the save.

Jefferson-Morgan 7, West Greene 3 – Jaymison Robinson had three hits and three RBIs in the Rockets’ Section 1-A win over the Pioneers (2-4, 3-8).

Winning pitcher John Woodward struck out seven in four innings and had three RBIs. Brayden Ellsworth finished up with three scoreless innings to earn the save for J-M (4-3, 5-3).

Softball

Brownsville 3, Waynesburg Central 2 – Pinch-runner Jordyn Davis scored the winning run for Brownsville (5-3, 2-1) on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh in a Section 4-2A win. Avery Davis went 3 for 3 with two doubles for Waynesburg Central (5-4, 2-1). Winning pitcher Ava Clark struck out 18 and allowed two runs on six hits for the Lady Falcons.

West Greene 21, Beth-Center 6 – Payton Gilbert went 4 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, Emmaline Beazell went 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs and Madelyn Roberts tripled and drove in two runs for West Greene (9-1, 4-1) in a Section 2-A win. Kendall Welsh had a triple and four RBIs for Beth-Center (1-7, 1-3).

Monday, April 14

Greensburg Central Catholic 6, Carmichaels 5 – Anthony Grippo doubled and scored on an error to give the host Centurions a walk-off Section 1-A win over the Mikes.

Tyler Samide hit a three-run homer and Bobby Smithnosky doubled and singled for GCC (4-0, 6-1) which also got two hits apiece from Grippo, Brody Bothell and Stephen Kochis. Alec Martin pitched one scoreless inning to earn the win.

Jordan Davis doubled, singled and knocked in four runs for Carmichaels (4-2, 5-3) which also got two hits and an RBI from Robbie Wilson-Jones who took the loss in relief.

Jefferson-Morgan 12, West Greene 2 – Drew Adams doubled, singled and threw a three-hitter as the Rockets knocked off the visiting Pioneers in a five-inning Section 1-A game.

Adams gave up two unearned runs with two walks and four strikeouts.

Brayden Ellsworth had three hits, Evan Kniha had two hits and three RBIs and Joe Bair contributed a double, single and two RBIs for J-M (3-3, 4-3) which also got two hits and two RBIs apiece from John Woodward and Brenton Barnhart and two singles from Jaymison Robinson.

Lane Allison was 3 for 3 and knocked in the only two runs for West Greene (2-3, 3-7). Darren Knight took the loss.

Waynesburg Central 10, Seton LaSalle 2 – Alex VanSickle drove in two runs with a home run and a double as the Raiders triumphed over the Rebels (4-2, 5-4) to remain unbeaten.

Austin Surber doubled and tripled and Jake Stephenson had triple, single and two RBIs for Waynesburg (5-0, 9-0) which also got two hits from CJ Corwin and Ethan Kiger and two RBIs from Kory Taylor.

Winning pitcher Tyler Groves came within one out of a complete game. He allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in 6 â…” innings.

Softball

Waynesburg Central 5, Frazier 4 – Gina Tedrow pitched a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts while surviving nine walks to earn the win in the Lady Raiders’ Section 4-2AA game at Frazier.

Avery Davis and Kolbi Rastoka each had a single and an RBI for Waynesburg (2-0, 5-3).

The only hits for the Lady Commodores (2-1, 5-2) were a two-run double by Grace Vaughn and an RBI triple by Emme Travalena. Losing pitcher Addison Hiles gave up just one earned run on five hits and no walks with eight strikeouts.

Carmichaels 15, Beth-Center 0 – Bailey Barnyak was 3 for 4 and threw a four-inning one-hitter as the Lady Mikes blanked the visiting Lady Bulldogs in a Section 2-A game.

Ali Jacobs hit a solo home run, Avery Voithofer also had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs and Carys McConnell doubled, singled and knocked in two runs for Carmichaels (3-0, 7-0) which also got two hits and three RBIs from Kaitlyn Waggett.

Barnyak walked one and struck out eight.

Jenna Pohill had the lone hit for B-C (1-2, 1-6).

West Greene 9, Jefferson-Morgan 0 – Kendra Tharp hit a three-run homer in an eight-run seventh inning as the Lady Pioneers used the late explosion to fight off the host Lady Rockets in a Section 2-A game.

Tharp had two hits as did Marissa Tharp, who scored the first run of the game on Madelyn Robert’s RBI in the sixth inning.

Winning pitcher Payton Gilbert allowed just two hits and three walks with three strikeouts for West Greene (3-1, 8-1).

Addie Larkin’s double and a single by losing pitcher Emmalee Bazzoli were the only hits for J-M (2-1, 5-2).

Mapletown 9, Avella 3 – Makenna Lotspeich homered and doubled in the Lady Maples’ Section 2-A victory over the Lady Eagles.

Cora Roberts also hit a home run for Mapletown (1-3, 3-6).

Avella (0-3, 1-7) got doubles from Haleigh Rush and Emily Buel.
