Local roundup: Raiders use solid all-round effort to beat McGuffey
Lucas Slifko shot a 3-over-par 36 and was one of four Waynesburg Central golfers with sub-40 rounds in a 193-208 Section 3-2A boys golf victory over visiting McGuffey at Rohanna Golf Course on Friday.
Austin Surber followed Slifko with a 37 while Cole Headlee and Rykan Gustafson both shot 39 for Waynesburg (2-0, 3-0).
Josh Rusmisel carded a 1-over 34 to earn medalist honors for McGuffey (2-1, 2-2) and Landon Hatfield shot a 38. Rounding out the scoring for the Highlanders were Logen Hughes (42), Noah Sibert (45) and Dominic Amos (49).
Thursday, Aug. 14
Jefferson-Morgan 203, Bentworth 227 – Urijah Teasdale fired a 1-over-par 36 to help propel Jefferson-Morgan past host Bentworth in a Section 3-2A match at Chippewa Golf Course.
Mile Sowden carded a 39 for the Rockets and was followed by Trenton Sowden (41), Jack Shaffer (43) and Jaymison Robinson (44).
Topping the Bearcats were Trent Wolpink and Sam Wade who each shot 43. Craig McDonald and Jeremy Bland both had a 46 for Bentworth and Corbin McMurray turned in a 49.
Carmichaels 212, Beth-Center 251 – Eli Hastings and Connor Lapana both shot a 5-over-par 40 in the Mikes’ Section 3-2A win over the host Bulldogs at Chippewa Golf Club.
Anthony Post followed that duo with a 42, Jayden Kerley carded a 43 and Cooper Richards rounded out the scoring for Carmichaels (1-0, 1-1) with a 47.
Parker Amos paced Beth-Center (0-2, 0-2) with a 42 and Austin Kurowski was right behind him with a 43. Also scoring for the Bulldogs were Claven Krosko (53), Kaleb Amos (55) and Alex Smith (58).
Wednesday, Aug. 13
Carmichaels 211, Brownsville 248 — Connor Lapana was the medalist in the Mikes’ Section 3-2A victory over visiting Brownsville with a 1-under-par 36 at Carmichaels Golf Club.
Eli Hastings followed Lapana with a 3-over 40. Rounding out the scoring for Carmichaels (1-1) were Jayden Kerley with a 43 and Anthony Post and Chase Ankrom who each shot 46.
The Falcons (0-2) were led by Benjamin Vojacek and Dominic Capan who both turned in a 46. Also scoring for Brownsville were Ava Rohland (48), Adam Vojacek (51) and Hunter McDonald (57).
Jefferson-Morgan 226, Beth-Center 270 — The Rockets’ Urijah Teasdale continued his strong performance in the early part of the season with a 1-over-par 37 to help his team to a Section 3-2A triumph at Greene County Country Club.
Jefferson-Morgan improved to 2-0 in section and overall play.
The Rockets’ Miles Sowden carded a 45, and teammates Brayden Ellsworth, Jack Shaffer and Jaymison Robinson all shot 48.
Parker Amos and Austin Kurowski both shot a 50 to lead the Bulldogs (0-2, 0-2). Jacob Nopwasky and Ryan Krosko fired 56s, and Greyson Selesto had a 58.
Tuesday, Aug. 12
Waynesburg Central 182, Avella 204 — The Eagles’ Tristan Davis carded a 2-under-par 31 for medalist honors, but the Raiders had all five of their starters shoot under 39 on the front nine at Rohanna’s Golf Course for a non-section victory.
Waynesburg (1-0, 2-0) was led by Lucas Slifko’s 35. Austin Surber shot a 36, and Matt Eisiminger, Cole Headlee and Jarett Tretinik all carded 37s.
Although his total was used in scoring the match, the Raiders’ Rykan Gustafson shot a 38.
Avella’s Nate Cilia came in at 38. Teammates Noah Greene and Kamden Jeffers each fired a 44. Alex Brandenburg’s 47 closed out the scoring for the Eagles.
Jefferson-Morgan 215, Brownsville 262 — Urijah Teasdale shot a 2-under 34 to help lead the Rockets to a Class 2A Section 3 victory at Greene County Country Club.
The Falcons’ Ben Vojacek carded a 2-over 38. Teammate Ava Rohland shot a 40. Adam Vojacek (57), Collin McCune (63) and Hunter McDonald (64) rounded out the scoring for Brownsville (0-1, 0-1).
Jefferson-Morgan’s Miles Sowden came in at 41. Brayden Ellsworth shot a 45 and Jack Shaffer 46. Trenton Sowden fired a 49.
The Rockets improved to 1-0 in section and overall play.
