Local roundup: Lady Pioneers upset Serra, clinch playoff spot
Kendra Tharp poured in a career-high 28 points as West Greene upset visiting Serra Catholic, 67-61 in overtime, to clinch a WPIAL girls basketball playoff spot in Section 2-1A Monday night.
The Lady Pioneers (6-6, 12-7) led 21-19 after the first quarter, 32-30 at halftime and 45-44 after three quarters. The Lady Eagles tied it at 57-57 with a 13-12 edge in the fourth quarter but West Greene held a 10-4 advantage in OT, including a 5-of-7 performance at the foul line, to pull out the victory.
Sammi Zimmerman followed Tharp with 15 points, Kylee Davis added 10 and Madelyn Roberts chopped in with seven points for the Lady Pioneers.
Belle Dumbroski tied Tharp for game-high honors with 28 points for Serra Catholic (10-3, 12-8) which also got 21 points from Abby Genes.
Chartiers-Houston 59, Carmichaels 20 – Ava Capozzoli scored 16 points in the Lady Bucs’ Section 3-2A win at Carmichaels.
Allison Wingard (13) and Ava Kolovich (11) also hit double digits for C-H (8-0, 16-4).
Avery Voithofer tossed in six points for the Lady Mikes (2-7, 2-17).
Clairton 74, Mapletown 24 – Iyanna Wade rang up 41 points as the Lady Bears (11-2, 15-4) romped over the visiting Lady Maples in a Section 2-1A win.
Helena Cumpston tossed in nine points for Mapletown (1-12, 3-18).
Keystone Oaks 54, Waynesburg Central 24 – Hannah York had18 points in Keystone Oaks’ Section 3-3A win over the visiting Lady Raiders.
Laney Wagner scored 12 points KO (9-1, 16-1).
Peyton Cowell tallied nine points for Waynesburg (3-7, 8-10).
Saturday, Feb. 1
Allegheny 71, Waynesburg 66 – Ryan Lang scored 20 points and Luke Barker followed close behind with 19 as Allegheny defeated the visiting Yellow Jackets in a PAC men’s basketball game.
Waynesburg led 34-33 at halftime but the Gators out-scored the Yellow Jackets 38-32 in the second half.
James Sitter, whose 3-pointer put Allegheny (5-9, 7-12) ahead to stay with 11:25 remaining, added 17 points.
Antone Baker tallied a game-high 26 points with 18 rebounds and four assists for Waynesburg (5-10, 7-13) which also got 14 points from Jalen Goins.
Women’s basketball
Allegheny 87, Waynesburg 78 – Emily Lauer scored a game-high 27 points and the Gators built a 52-33 halftime lead in knocking off the visiting Yellow Jackets in a PAC game.
Waynesburg (5-10, 10-10) out-scored the hosts 45-35 in the second half but the first-half deficit proved to be too large to overcome.
Sofia Genareo (17), Jess Bickart (15) and Sarah Santicola (12) also hit double figures in scoring for Allegheny (12-2, 13-6).
Kalista Friday tallied 18 points, six assists and four rebounds for the Yellow Jackets who also got 16 points and nine rebounds from Julz Mohrbacher, 14 points from Tori Wesolowski and three 3-pointers and 12 points from Mia Henkins.
Penn State Shenango 75, Penn State Fayette 46 – Hailee Aguinago had 21 points and 13 rebounds as Shenango gradually pulled away for a PSUAC victory at Fayette.
Jaysina Sellers followed with 11 points and Alli Lewis had 10 for Shenango (9-2, 11-6).
Heaven Grumm totaled 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Uniontown graduate Geelece Ingram also scored 12 points for Fayette (1-10, 3-16). Carmichaels graduate Sophia Zalar contributed nine points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.
Boys basketball
West Greene 57, Burgettstown 48 – Lane Allison poured in a game-high 35 points and the visiting Pioneers out-scored to the Blue Devils 25-16 in the fourth quarter to earn the Section 3-AA victory.
The win moved West Greene (9-3,11-7) into a second-place tie with Jefferson-Morgan.
Patrick Durbin added 10 points for the PIoneers who led 22-16 at halftime before Burgettstown (2-10, 5-14) pulled even at 32-32 after three quarters.
Parker Rommes had 17 points and Sam Elich added 13 for the Blue Devils.
Monessen 71, Carmichaels 40 – The host Greyhounds racked up 30 points in the opening quarter on their way to a non-section win over the Mikes.
Jayveyon Jeffries tossed in 11 points for Monessen (12-6) with Torry Williams and Kayden Kolbeck adding 10 apiece.
Chase Ankrom tallied a game-high 15 points for Carmichaels (5-14).
Friday, Jan. 31
Jefferson-Morgan 45, Fort Cherry 44 – Houston Guesman’s three-point play with 30 seconds left put the host Rockets ahead and they hung on to edge the visiting Rangers in a Section 3-2A battle.
Jefferson-Morgan out-scored Fort Cherry 12-5 in the fourth quarter.
Jeremiah Roberston scored 12 points to lead J-M (9-3, 13-6) which remained in second place while Fort Cherry (7-4, 9-8) fell into fourth. Jase Bedilion (11) and Dayten Marion (10) also reached double figures for the Rockets who trailed 16-5 after the first quarter.
Shane Conali had a game-high 24 points for the Rangers who led 26-22 at halftime and 39-33 after three quarters.
Southmoreland 58, Waynesburg Central 51 – Noah Felentzer poured in 28 points and the Scotties out-scored the visiting Raiders 12-5 in overtime to earn the Section 4-3A victory and clinch at least a share of first place in the process.
Cole Headlee totaled 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Waynesburg, which led 11-4 after the first quarter, 23-12 at halftime and 35-29 after three before Southmoreland (8-0, 15-4) forced OT with a 17-11 advantage in the fourth.
Carmichaels 64, Mapletown 40 – Robbie Wilson-Jones rang up a game-high 21 points as the visiting Mikes defeated the Maples in a Section 3-2A game.
Carmichaels led 17-7 after the first quarter but Mapletown (0-11, 0-17) fought back to within 27-22 by halftime only to have the Mikes pull away with a 21-5 edge in the third for a 48-27 advantage.
Colin Andrews tallied 12 points for Carmichaels (4-8, 5-13) which is one game behind Beth-Center for the fifth and final playoff spot out of the section.
Lucas Stevenson paced the Maples (0-11, 0-17) with 15 points and Tyler Howard had 12.
Thursday, Jan. 30
Beth-Center 59, Carmichaels 29 – Callie Dorsey poured in 31 points as the host Lady Bulldogs cruised past the Lady Mikes in a Section 3-2A game.
Violet Trump added 12 points for Beth-Center (6-2, 12-7).
Avery Voithofer led Carmichaels (2-6, 2-16) with 14 points.
Geibel Catholic 50, Mapletown 16 – Emma Larkin hit four 3-pointers on her way to a 26-point night as the first-place Lady Gators rolled past the host Lady Maples in a Section 2-1A game.
Mallory Clemmer followed with 16 points for Geibel (11-1, 19-1).
Leona Liggett totaled four points and five rebounds for Mapletown (1-11, 3-17).
Bishop Canevin 35, West Greene 25 – Natalie Kirsch tossed in 14 points as the Lady Crusaders fought off the host Lady Pioneers in a Section 2-1A game.
Bishop Canevin (5-6, 10-7) led 8-4 after the first quarter, 16-14 at halftime and 26-21 after three before using a 9-4 edge in the final frame to pull out the win.
Kendra Tharp tied for game-high honors with 14 points for West Greene (5-6, 11-7).
Chartiers-Houston 57, Jefferson-Morgan 26 – Allison Wingard scored 13 points in the first-place Lady Bucs’ Section 3-2A victory over the visiting Lady Rockets.
Ava Kolovich followed close behind with 12 points for Chartiers-Houston (7-0, 14-4).
Ava Wood led Jefferson-Morgan (0-7, 1-16) with 10 points.
McGuffey 55, Waynesburg Central 14 – Faith Ealy led the Lady Highlanders with 14 points in a Section 3-3A win at Waynesburg.
Taylor Schumacher followed with 13 points for McGuffey (6-4, 12-7).
Peyton Cowell paced the Lady Raiders (3-6, 8-9) with seven points.
Riverview 54, Frazier 27 – Katrina Tsambis had 24 points and Lily Bauer contributed 15 as Riverview (7-1, 12-3) beat the host Commodores in a Section 4-2A game.
Chloe Harger tossed in 14 points for Frazier (1-7, 5-14).
Wednesday, Jan. 29
Southmoreland 36, Jefferson-Morgan 33 – The Scotties downed the Rockets in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A team wrestling championships at Burrell High School.
The Scotties’ Shawn Hollis earned a 5-0 decision over Brenton Barnhart in the final match of the dual meet at 152 pounds to break a 33-33 tie.
Southmoreland won six of the first nine bouts contested for a 33-16 lead following the action at 127 before the Rockets won three straight bouts to tie the match heading into the last bout.
The Scotties’ Micah McGeary (127), Landon Delara (172), Lewis Mains (189) and David Sager (285) won by fall. Nicholas Lubecki earned a 9-3 decision at 121 for Southmoreland.
The Scotties’ Kaden Shannon (215) won by forfeit.
Jefferson-Morgan’s James Dulaney (133) and Dominic Sowden (145) won by fall. Teammates Brayden Hanning (107), Johnny Gilbert (139) and Alex Palko (160) recorded technical falls. Caleb Dulaney received a forfeit at 114.
Boys basketball
Waynesburg Central 60, Yough 28 – Cole Headlee had 18 points and five assists in the Raiders’ non-section win over the visiting Cougars.
Waynesburg (8-9) led 11-10 after the first quarter and 23-14 at halftime then out-scored Yough (1-18) 24-6 in the third to take a commanding 47-20 advantage.
Dane Woods followed Headlee with 14 points, Alex VanSickle added 12 points and Alex Eck pulled down 10 rebounds for the Raiders, who have won seven in a row after starting the season 1-9.
Ryan Westerman scored six points for the Cougars.
Men’s basketball
Chatham 82, Waynesburg 74 – Xavier Johnson scored 33 points as first-place Chatham held off the host Yellow Jackets in a PAC game with 12 lead changes.
Waynesburg (5-9, 7-12) led 34-30 at halftime and pushed its advantage up to 38-32 early in the second half after a basket by Antone Baker. The Cougars went on a seven-point run to go up 39-38.
Rayshod Hooper’s layup gave the Yellow Jackets their last lead of the game, 42-41 with 15:24 remaining.
Chatham’s Simon Boyer tied the score with a free throw and then made a layup to put the visitors ahead to stay at 44-42.
Diaun Pickett had 20 points for the Cougars (13-1, 16-3) who also got 18 from Boyer.
Baker scored 15 points to lead Waynesburg, which also got 12 from PJ Suggs and 11 from Jaylen Davis.
Women’s basketball
Chatham 84, Waynesburg 59 – Ashlie Louden tallied 24 points and Charjae Brock followed with 18 in Chatham’s PAC win at Waynesburg.
The Cougars (11-3, 13-5) also got 12 points from Madison Nereu and 11 from Alyssa Laukus.
Kalista Friday led the Yellow Jackets (5-9, 10-9) with 12 points and Tori Wesolowski had 11.
Tuesday, Jan. 28
West Greene 45, Jefferson-Morgan 39 – West Greene took a three-point lead into halftime and hung on for a key Section 3-2A boys basketball victory over Jefferson-Morgan at West Greene Junior/Senior High School.
The Pioneers (8-3, 10-7) trailed 12-9 after the first quarter, but a 13-7 advantage in the second period provided the home team with a 22-19 lead at halftime. Both teams scored 11 in the third quarter before West Greene used a 12-9 edge in the fourth to hand the Rockets their third loss in section play. J-M (8-3, 12-6) with the loss fell into a second-place tie with West Greene.
The Pioneers’ Lane Allison scored a game-high 18 points.
Jeremiah Robertson led the Rockets in scoring with 14 points.
Carmichaels 61, Beth-Center 52 — The Mikes rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to top the Bulldogs in Section 3-2A action.
Beth-Center (5-6, 8-10) had a 29-15 halftime lead before the Mikes (3-8, 4-13) outscored the visitors, 21-12, in the third quarter, and 25-11 in the fourth period.
Beth-Center’s Jason Zellie scored a game-high 23 points. Teammate Jonah Sussan added 10.
Robbie Wilson-Jones led Carmichaels in scoring with 12 points. The Mikes’ Dakota Reynolds put in 11.
Girls basketball
Brownsville 61, Waynesburg Central 29 — The Lady Falcons continue to push for a playoff spot, and moved one step closer after a Section 3-3A home triumph over the Raiders.
Brownsville improved to 4-5 in section play and 11-7 overall. Waynesburg fell to 3-6 in section play and 8-9 overall.
The Lady Falcons’ Skyler Gates led all scorers with 17 points. Teammate Zhariah Reed had 15. Ciara Horabik made four 3-pointers and had 14 points for the home team.
Brownsville’s Ava Clark chipped in with 11.
The Lady Raiders were led in scoring by Mya Smith’s 10 points.
Carmichaels 45, Bentworth 28 — The Lady Mikes took control in the second half to earn a Section 3-2A victory.
Carmichaels’ Ali Jacobs led the game in scoring with 16 points. The Lady Mikes’ Avery Voithofer had 11 and teammate Joselyn Carter put in 10.
Bella Moyer led the Lady Bearcats in scoring with 10 points.
West Greene 37, Mapletown 30 — The Lady Maples had a six-point lead after the first quarter, but the Lady Pioneers battled back for a Section 2-1A road victory.
West Greene improved to 5-5 in section play and 11-6 overall. The Lady Pioneers’ Kendra Tharp scored 13 points. Teammate Madelyn Roberts added 11.
Mapletown was led in scoring by Nicole Barrera’s 13.
