Waynesburg CentralÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ Cole Headlee sinks a layup during a game at Brownsville on Jan. 24. The Raiders were seeded 14th in the Class 3A for the WPIAL playoffs and will play a first-round game at No. 3 Mohawk on Feb. 18.

Waynesburg Central finished the boys basketball season with a 9-13 overall record but went 9-6 after a 0-7 start and wound up tied for second in Section 4-3A behind Southmoreland.

When the WPIAL released its playoff pairings on Monday coach Michael Juliano’s Raiders were given a No. 14 seed in Class 3A and will play at No. 3 Mohawk (17-5, 10-2, second in Section 1-3A) in a first round game at 7 p.m. on Feb. 18.

Waynesburg is one of five Greene County teams that qualified for the postseason along with the Jefferson-Morgan and West Greene boys teams and the West Greene and Carmichaels girls teams.

Coach Brandon Lawless’ Rockets (10-4, 14-7) and coach Jim Romanus’ Pioneers (10-4, 12-8) tied for second with Fort Cherry behind Section 3-2A champion Chartiers-Houston in Section 3-2A but both were assigned preliminary round games while the Rangers (10-4, 12-8) were seeded ninth.

Jefferson-Morgan was seeded 12th and was scheduled to host No. 21 Springdale (13-8, 7-7, tied for fourth place in Section 1-2A) Thursday night. West Greene was seeded 14th and was set to host No. 19 Brentwood (8-12, 5-7, tied for fourth in Section 2-2A) the same night.

If either was victorious, next up would be Monday’s quarterfinals with the Rockets at No. 5 Northgate and/or the Pioneers at No. 3 Jeannette.

The top four seeds in each boys classification were as follows:

Class 6A – Upper St. Clair, New Castle, Imani Christian and Fox Chapel.

Class 5A – Montour, Baldwin, Uniontown and Chartiers Valley.

Class 4A – Belle Vernon, North Catholic, Beaver and Avonworth.

Class 3A – Aliquippa, South Allegheny, Mohawk and Bishop Canevin.

Class 2A – Greensburg Central Catholic, Sewickley Academy, Jeannette and Neshannock.

Class A – Neighborhood Academy, Serra Catholic, Nazareth Prep and Aquinas.

On the girls side, West Greene was the highest seeded Greene County team. The Lady Pioneers were put at No. 7 in Class A and will host No. 10 Eden Christian at 7 p.m. on Feb. 17.

A victory would send West Greene (15-7, 8-6, fourth in Section 1-A) on the road to section rival Geibel Catholic, the No. 2 seed, which received a first-round bye, on Feb. 20. The Gators are 21-1 overall and were the Section 1-A champions with a 13-1 mark.

The Lady Pioneers will be trying to extend their impressive streak of consecutive years with at least one playoff win to nine.

In Class 2A, No. 15 Carmichaels (3-18, 3-7, tied for fourth in Section 3-2A) is at No. 2 Aliquippa (15-4, 9-1, tied for first in Section 1-2A) on Feb. 18. The Lady Mikes clinched a playoff spot last Thursday with a 35-33 win at Jefferson-Morgan.

The top four seeds in each girls classification were as follows:

Class 6A – Norwin, Upper St. Clair, Seneca Valley and Canon-McMillan.

Class 5A – South Fayette, Peters Township, Penn-Trafford and Shaler.

Class 4A – Blackhawk, Oakland Catholic, North Catholic and Elizabeth Forward.

Class 3A – Shady Side Academy, Greensburg Central Catholic, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and Keystone Oaks.

Class 2A – Neshannock, Aliquippa, Winchester Thurston and South Side.

Class A – Union, Geibel, Clairton and Serra Catholic.

The number of PIAA qualifiers out of each bracket was also revealed as follows: Boys – Class 6A (4), Class 5A (8), Class 4A (5), Class 3A (7), Class 2A (8) and Class A (4); Girls – Class 6A (3), Class 5A (8), Class 4A (6), Class 3A (6), Class 2A (7) and Class A (6).
