Local roundup: Lady Mikes defeat J-M for first win

Carmichaels earned its first win of the season by defeating visiting Jefferson-Morgan, 38-32, in a Section 3-AA girls basketball game Monday night.

Ke’lani Chun led the Lady Mikes (1-4, 1-12) withs 15 points.

The score was tied 8-8 after one quarter before Carmichaels pushed out to a 20-14 halftime lead and held a 31-24 advantage after three.

Brelynn Wood topped the Lady Rockets in scoring and tied for game-high honors with 15 points.

Waynesburg Central 55, Charleroi 33 – Avery Davis scored a game-high 18 points and Peyton Cowell followed with 17 as the Lady Raiders knocked off the Lady Cougars in a Section 3-AAA game.

Mya Smith added 10 points for Waynesburg (3-3, 8-5).

Eden Smith had 12 points for Charleroi (0-6, 0-15).

West Greene 72, Avella 41 – Kendra Tharp poured in 22 points and Madelyn Roberts tossed in 20 in the Lady Pioneers’ Section 2-A victory over the Lady Eagles.

Kylee Davis also reached double figures for West Greene (3-2, 8-2) with 10 points.

Ava Franks rang up 18 points for the Lady Eagles (2-5, 6-8).

Bishop Canevin 53, Mapletown 26 – Kya Cooley scored 21 points in the Lady Crusaders’ Section 2-A win over the Lady Maples.

Isabella Sysak followed with 14 for Bishop Canevin (3-3, 8-4).

Treslee Weston had six points for Mapletown (0-7, 2-13).

Saturday, Jan. 11

Burgettstown Invitational — West Greene’s Colin Whyte won the individual championship at 285 with a 4-1 decision over Laurel’s Casey Wilson in the finals in high school wrestling action in the Burgettstown Invitational.

The Pioneers’ Noah Collins was fourth at 121.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Brayden Hanning (106) and Landon Heath (285) placed sixth.

Boys basketball

Waynesburg Central 45, Charleroi 33 — The Raiders outscored the Cougars by 16 in the second half to earn a Section 4-AAA.

Waynesburg’s Cole Headlee scored a game-high 16 points. Teammate Austin Surber put in 12.

Charleroi’s Shea Smith had 11.

The Raiders improved to 3-1 in section play.

Girls basketball

Waynesburg Central 49, Beth-Center 36 — Avery Davis scored 37 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double in the Lady Raiders’ non-section win at Beth-Center.

Callie Dorsey led the Lady Bulldogs (8-6) in scoring with 16 points.

Waynesburg improved to 7-5 overall.

Friday, Jan. 10

Jefferson-Morgan 64, Carmichaels 33 — The Rockets slowly built up their lead en route to a Section 3-AA triumph over the Mikes in a Greene County showdown.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Jeramiah Roberston scored a game-high 16 points. Teammates Jase Bedillion (15) and John Woodward (11) were also in double figures.

Robbie Wilson-Jones led Carmichaels (2-4, 3-8) in scoring with 10 points.

The Rockets improved to 5-1 in section play and 9-3 overall.

Waynesburg Central 68, Ligonier Valley 52 — The Raiders had four players in double figures in a Section 4-AAA win over Ligonier Valley at Waynesburg.

Alex Vansickle led Waynesburg (3-1, 3-9) and the game in scoring with 23 points. Alex Eck put in 19, Dane Woods 14 and Cole Headlee 12 for the home team.

Parker Hollick led Ligonier Valley (1-2, 6-6) in scoring with 21 points. Teammate Michael Wisniewski added 13.

Fort Cherry 55, West Greene 42 — The Rangers clung to a one-point lead at the end of the third quarter, but outscored the visiting Pioneers by 14 in the fourth for a Section 3-AA victory.

The two teams are tied in the section race at 4-2. Both have overall records of 6-6.

Fort Cherry’s Shane Cornali led the game in scoring with 24 points. The Rangers’ Evan Rogers had 12.

Parker Burns led West Greene in scoring with 16 points. Teammate Lane Allison put in 11.

Chartiers-Houston 77, Mapletown 33 — The Buccaneers jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a Section 3-AA win.

The Bucs’ Nate Gregory scored a game-high 20 points. Aaron Walsh added 11 for Chartiers-Houston, who improved to 5-1 in section play and 11-2 overall.

Lucas Stevenson (13) and Tyler Howard (10) were in double figures for the Maples (0-6, 0-11).

Girls basketball

Geibel Catholic 59, Mapletown 22 — Emma Larkin scored 27 points and the Lady Gators took care of business in a Section 2-A home victory.

Geibel Catholic’s Janiah Darnell added 10 points. The Lady Gators are 5-1 in section play and 12-1 overall.

Makenna Lotspeich led the Lady Maples (0-6, 2-12) in scoring with 10 points.

Thursday, Jan. 9

California 55, Jefferson-Morgan 37 — California had a 14-point lead after the first quarter and breezed to a Section 3-AA victory at Jefferson-Morgan in girls basketball action.

The Lady Trojans’ Hayley Gibson had high-game scoring honors with 20 points. Teammate Olivia Gibson added 10, as California improved to 2-1 in section play and 5-3 overall.

Ava Wood led the Lady Rockets (0-3, 1-11) in scoring with 19. J-M’s Lieghana Gooden had 12.

Keystone Oaks 48, Waynesburg Central 33 — The Lady Golden Eagles outscored the Lady Raiders by 14 in the fourth quarter to turn a one-point game into a comfortable victory in Section 3-AAA play.

Laney Wagner scored a game-high 24 points for Keystone Oaks (3-1, 9-1).

Avery Davis led Waynesburg (2-3, 6-5) in scoring with 22 points.

Clairton 72, Mapletown 34 — The Lady Bears’ Iyanna Wade continued her torrid scoring stretch in putting in 49 points, as Clairton earned a Section 2-A win at Mapletown.

The Lady Bears improved to 6-0 in section play and 8-2 overall.

Treslee Weston led the Lady Maples (0-5, 2-11) in scoring with 12 points. Teammate Nicole Barrera had seven points and eight rebounds.

Chartiers-Houston 58, Carmichaels 17 — The Lady Buccaneers had three players in double figures in a Section 3-AA triumph over the Lady Mikes.

C-H’s Ava Capozzoli led the game in scoring with 19 points. Ava Kolovich had 16 and Allison Wingard added 14, as the Lady Bucs improved to 3-0 in the section and 9-1 overall.

Ke’lani Chun led Carmichaels (0-4, 0-12) in scoring with six points.

Wednesday, Jan. 8

Carmichaels 37, Mapletown 27 – The host Mikes rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit for a Section 3-AA win over Greene County rival Mapletown in a boys basketball clash.

Dayton Reynold led Carmichaels (2-3, 3-7) with 10 points, Steve Lewis followed with nine and Robbie Wilson-Jones added eight.

The Maples (0-5, 0-10) led 11-6 after one quarter and increased their advantage to 21-14 at halftime. The Mikes pulled even at 25-25 after three quarters then outscored Mapletown 12-2 in the final frame.

Lucas Stevenson and Tyler Howard each scored eight points for the Maples.

West Greene 68, Burgettstown 40 – Lane Allison led a foursome of Pioneers in double figures with a game-high 19 points as West Greene toppled the visiting Blue Devils in a Section 3-AA game.

Parker Burns (13), Patrick Durbin (11) and Matt Wassil (10) also reached double digits for West Greene (4-1, 6-5), which took a 19-7 lead in the first quarter and pulled away from there.

Kolton County had 13 points for Burgettstown (0-5, 3-9).

Girls basketball

Beth-Center 48, Carmichaels 13 – Violet Trump and Callie Dorsey each rang up 13 points in the Lady Bulldogs’ Section 3-AA victory over the host Lady Mikes.

Beth-Center (2-1, 7-5) took a 13-2 lead in the first quarter but Carmichaels (0-3, 0-11) held a 3-2 edge in the second to stay with 15-5 at halftime before the Lady Bulldogs took charge by outscoring the Lady Mikes 19-2 in the third.

Duski Staggers had four points for Carmichaels.

Boys wrestling

Jefferson-Morgan 71, Brownsville 0 – The Rockets recorded six falls in whitewashing the Falcons in a Section 3-AA match.

J-M (1-1, 7-3) got pins from Brayden Hanning at 107, Caleb Dulandey at 114, E.J. Lingenfield at 121, Johnny Gilbert at 145, Alex Palko at 189 and Landon Heath at 285.

The Rockets’ other wrestled victory as by Connor Pinchok by technical fall at 127.

Brownsville falls to 0-3 in the section and 0-4 overall.

Tuesday, Jan. 7

Southmoreland 72, Waynesburg Central 62 – Noah Felentzer scored 24 points as the Scotties built up a nine-point halftime lead on their way to a Section 4-AAA boys basketball win at Waynesburg.

Ty Whoric (15), Brady Sherbondy (12) and Stanley Chapman (11) also hit double figures for Southmoreland (2-0, 9-2).

Cole Headlee led the Raiders (1-1, 1-9) with 18 points and six assists, Alex VanSickle scored 17 points and Alex Eck totaled 10 points and seven rebounds. Waynesburg also got eight boards from Dane Woods.

Fort Cherry 47, Jefferson-Morgan 43 – Shane Cornali totaled 19 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and 22 rebounds as the host Rangers rallied in the fourth quarter to hand the first-place Rockets their first defeat in Section 3-AA play.

Fort Cherry (3-2, 5-6) led 8-2 after the first quarter before Jefferson-Morgan (4-1, 8-3) fought back to take a 24-23 halftime lead and held a 37-30 advantage after three. The Rangers outscored the visitors 17-6 in the final frame to pull out the victory.

Matt Sieg (13) and Evan Rogers (12) also scored in double digits for the Rangers. Sieg, who recently returned from injury, also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Houston Guesman led the Rockets with 11 points.

Girls basketball

McGuffey 52, Waynesburg Central 34 – Lexi Ewig and Taylor Schumacher each scored 15 points in the Lady Highlanders’ Section 3-AAA win over the visiting Lady Raiders.

McGuffey (3-1, 8-4) held a slim 4-3 advantage after a low-scoring first quarter but outscored Waynesburg 18-6 in the second to take a 22-7 halftime lead. The Lady Raiders clawed their way back to within 30-25 after three quarters before the Lady Highlanders used a 22-9 edge in the final frame to pull away.

Avery Davis led all scorers with 21 points for Waynesburg (2-2, 6-4).
