Local roundup: Tharp scores 22 as Lady Pioneers stomp Monessen

West Greene’s defense shut down Monessen, 58-13, in a Class A Section 2 girls basketball game Monday night at West Greene Junior/Senior High School.

West Greene had a 19-3 lead after the first quarter and a 26-7 halftime advantage. The Lady Pioneers (4-5, 10-6) outscored the visitors, 22-5, in the third period to extend their lead to 48-12.

West Greene’s Kendra Tharp had a game-high 22 points. Teammate Kylee Davis added 10.

Madison Johnson scored all 13 of the Lady Greyhounds’ points.

Beth-Center 51, Jefferson-Morgan 27 — Callie Dorsey had a game-high 29 points in the Lady Bulldogs’ Class 2A Section 3 road triumph over the Lady Rockets.

Beth-Center (5-2, 11-7) had a 17-5 lead after the first quarter and a 34-15 halftime advantage. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Jefferson-Morgan, 17-4, in the third quarter. The Lady Rockets (0-6, 1-15) had an 8-1 edge in the fourth.

Beth-Center’s Violet Trump was in double figures with 12 points.

Leighana Gooden led Jefferson-Morgan in scoring with 10 points.

Seton LaSalle 55, Waynesburg Central 29 — The Lady Rebels came out strong and never looked back in a Class 3A Section 3 win over the visiting Lady Raiders.

Seton LaSalle improved to 8-1 in section play and 12-5 overall. The Lady Rebels’ Tiara Curry had 16 points. Teammate Addie Lonergan added 10.

Peyton Cowell led Waynesburg (3-5, 8-8) in scoring with nine points.

Serra Catholic 59, Mapletown 19 — The Lady Eagles jumped out early and cruised to a Class A Section 2 home victory over the Lady Maples.

Serra Catholic’s Bella Dumbroski had a game-high 25 points, as the Lady Eagles improved to 8-2 in section play and 10-6 overall.

Teammates Nikki Sfanos (15) and Abby Jones (15) were also in double digits.

Nicole Barrera scored six points for Mapletown (1-8, 3-14).

Saturday, Jan. 25

Sharon Duals — Jefferson-Morgan went 4-1 and were runner-up to Bellefonte during wrestling action at Sharon High School.

The Rockets improved to 13-4 this season. Jefferson-Morgan was next scheduled to wrestle Wednesday in the WPIAL Class 2A team tournament against Southmoreland at Burrell High School.

Thomas Automotive Wrestling Classic – West Greene’s Colin Whyte lost a 7-0 decision to Somerset’s Rowan Holmes in the finals at 285 at Bedford High School. Whyte won two bouts by fall and earned a 7-0 decision to advance to the finals.

Teammate Noah Collins placed third at 121.

Friday, Jan. 24

Jefferson-Morgan 62, Mapletown 13 — The Rockets jumped out early and never looked back in a Class 2A Section 3 boys basketball win at the home of the Maples.

Jefferson-Morgan improved to 8-2 in section play and 12-5 overall. J-M’s Jeremiah Robertson had 16 points to lead all scorers. The Rockets’ Houston Guesman (14) and Jaymison Robinson (11) were in

double digits scoring.

Chartiers-Houston 49, West Greene 40 — The Buccaneers avenged their lone Class 2A Section 3 loss after rallying in the fourth quarter to defeat the visiting Pioneers.

West Greene (7-3, 9-7) had an 8-5 lead after the first quarter and a 27-24 halftime advantage. Chartiers-Houston (9-1, 15-2) cut the deficit to 32-31 after three periods and outscored the Pioneers by 10 in the fourth quarter.

C-H’s Justus Buckingham scored a game-high 18 points. The Bucs’ Nate Gregory added 16.

Lane Allison led West Greene in scoring with 13 points.

Burgettstown 63, Carmichaels 36 — The Blue Devils flew out of the gates and had a 24-point lead following the first quarter en route to a Class 2A Section 3 win over the visiting Mikes.

Parker Rommes led Burgettstown (2-8, 5-12) and the game in scoring with 20 points. Teammate Sam Elich put in 12 and Colton County 11.

Robbie Wilson-Jones led the Mikes (2-8, 3-13) in scoring with 15 points.

Girls basketball

Avella 34, Mapletown 20 — The Eagles’ defense held down the Maples in a Class A Section 2 victory at Mapletown Junior/Senior High School.

Avella (3-6, 8-9) had two players reach double figures in scoring, as Sydney Stroke had 12 and Ava Frank 11.

Cameron, W.Va. 36, West Greene 28 — The Lady Pioneers could never get going in a non-section setback to Cameron, W.Va.

Madelyn Roberts led West Greene (3-5, 9-6) in scoring with 16 points.

Maci Nedy (12) and Devon School (10) led Cameron in the scoring column.

Thursday, Jan. 23

California 55, Carmichaels 38 – Olivia Gibson tallied 14 points and was one of four Lady Trojans who scored in double figures as California defeated the visiting Lady Mikes in a Section 3-AA girls basketball game.

Lauren Hartley followed with 14 points and Addiston Gregory and Hayley Gibson each added 10 points for California (4-2, 7-4) which took control by out-scoring Carmichaels 19-4 in the opening quarter.

Avery Voithofer topped the Lady Mikes (1-5, 1-15) in scoring with 11 points.

Clairton 63, West Greene 52 – Iyanna Wade scored 32 points to become the Lady Bears’ career scoring leader and Clairton built a 38-19 halftime lead and held on from there for a Section 2-A victory over the visiting Lady Pioneers.

Jamiya Childs followed with 15 points and Karma Fuquz contributed 14 for the Lady Bears (7-1, 9-3).

Madelyn Roberts rang up 17 points to lead West Greene (3-5, 9-5) which also got 15 points from Kendra Tharp.

Bentworth 42, Jefferson-Morgan 32 – Kayla O’Dell scored 18 points and the Lady Bearcats rode a strong third quarter to a Section 3-AA win over the visiting Lady Rockets.

Jefferson-Morgan (0-5, 1-14) led 12-7 after the first quarter and 19-16 at halftime before Bentworth (3-3, 7-10) outscored the Lady Rockets 16-7 in the third to go up 32-26. The Lady Bearcats put the game away with a 10-6 edge in the fourth quarter.

Belle Moyer tallied seven points for Bentworth.

Ava Wood led J-M with eight points.

Mapletown 39, Monessen 28 – Nicole Bacerra recorded a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds as the Lady Maples knocked off the visiting Lady Greyhounds in a Section 2-A clash.

Mapletown (1-7, 3-13) led 12-8 after the first quarter but Monessen (1-7, 3-9) surged to a 21-18 halftime advantage. The Lady Maples went back on top by outscoring the visitors 13-5 in the third quarter for a 31-26 lead and limited the Lady Greyhounds to just two points in the final frame to put the game away.

Treslee Weston also had a double-double for the Lady Maples with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Na’Jaziah Carter scored 12 points and Madison Johnson had 10 to lead Monessen.

Washington 50, Waynesburg 46 – Olivia Woods scored 19 points as the Lady Prexies overcame a slot start to defeat the host Lady Raiders in a Section 3-AAA game.

Waynesburg led 13-7 after the first quarter and 21-16 at halftime before Washington (4-5, 7-10) rode a 20-6 edge in the third to a 36-27 advantage.

The Lady Raiders (3-4, 8-7) fought back in the fourth quarter but fell just short.

Faith Partozoti had 11 points for the Lady Prexies.

Peyton Cowell rang up a game-high 24 points for Waynesburg and Briena Coon contributed 12 points.

Boys basketball

Jefferson-Morgan 72, Beth-Center 40 – Jeremiah Robertson poured in a game-high 25 points as the host Rockets soared past the Bulldogs in a Section 3-AA game.

Jefferson-Morgan led 37-24 at halftime then pulled away with a 24-10 advantage in the third quarter to go up 61-34.

Jase Bedilion added 16 points for the Rockets (7-2, 11-5) who also got 13 points from Houston Guesman.

Brayden Hull tallied 12 points for Beth-Center (5-4, 8-8) which also got 10 points from Jason Zellie.

West Greene 61, Mapletown 33 – Lane Allison scored 21 points as the host Pioneers rolled past the Maples in a Section 3-AA game.

Parker Burns added 10 points for West Greene (7-2, 9-6) which jumped out to a 21-4 lead in the first quarter.

Lucas Stevenson paced Mapletown (0-9, 0-15) with 19 points.

Chartiers-Houston 55, Carmichaels 21 – Julius Buckington scored 10 points in the Bucs’ Section 3-AA victory at Carmichaels.

Nate Gregory followed with 16 points for C-H (7-1, 13-2).

Dayton Reynolds had five points for the Mikes (2-7, 3-12).

Wednesday, Jan. 22

Jefferson-Morgan 58, Frazier 17 — The Rockets won 10 out of 13 bouts and assured themselves a tie in the Class 2A Section 3 wrestling standings after defeating the Commodores.

Jefferson-Morgan, Bentworth and Beth-Center handed each other a defeat in section play to finish at 3-1.

The Rockets rang up seven pins, as Caleb Dulaney (114), E.J. Lingenfield (121), Connor Pinchok (127), Dominic Sowden (145), Alex Palko (189), Tristan Miller (215) and Landon Heath (285) planked their opponents.

J-M’s James Dulaney (133) and Johnny Gilbert (139) won by technical fall. The Rockets’ Brayden Hanning received a forfeit at 107.

Frazier’s Ryan Celaschi won by fall in 46 seconds at 160. Teammate Jackson Angelo recorded a technical fall, 17-2, at 172. The Commodores’ Jonah Erdely received a forfeit at 152.

West Greene 41, Washington 21 — Hunter Gorby and Colin Whyte won the fall to help lead the Pioneers to a Class 2A Section 1 victory over the Prexies.

West Greene’s Caleb Orndoff won by technical fall, 17-2, in 4:30, at 145. The Pioneers improved to 1-2 in section action and 2-8 overall.

Men’s basketball

Waynesburg 91, Bethany 89 – Anthone Baker came through at both ends of the court in the final seconds of the Yellow Jackets’ PAC victory at Bethany.

Baker hit a tie-breaking layup with 8.7 seconds to give Waynesburg a 90-88 lead and Bethany’s Bryson Bishop was fouled with four seconds left. Bishop made the first free throw to cut the lead to one but missed the second. Josh Coffeld gathered in the offensive rebound for the Bison and attempted a potential game-winning shot but it was blocked by Baker.

The Yellow Jackets’ PJ Suggs made one of two free throws with one second left to set the final score.

Baker and Suggs each wound up with 25 points to lead Waynesburg (5-7, 7-10) which also got 14 points and 11 rebounds from Rayshod Hooper and 11 points from Jalen Goins.

The Yellow Jackets led 38-34 at halftime.

Jess Roller and Cole Dailey paced the Bison (1-10, 6-10) with 13 points apiece.

Tuesday, Jan. 21

Waynesburg Central 59, Jefferson-Morgan 53 – Alex VanSickle scored a game-high 18 points and the host Raiders rallied in the second half to defeat the Rockets in a non-section boys basketball game.

Jefferson-Morgan (10-5) led 14-13 after the first quarter and 28-26 at halftime before Waynesburg used a 15-7 edge in the third to take a 41-35 advantage. The Raiders pulled away in the fourth, out-scoring the visitors 15-7.

Cole Headlee added 15 points for Waynesburg (5-9) which also got 13 points and 14 rebounds from Alex Eck.

Jeremiah Robertson paced the Rockets with 12 points, Jase Bedilion had 11 and John Woodward chipped in with 10.
