Copperheads suffer first loss of season

In a battle of unbeatens in Fayette County Baseball League (FCBL) play on Sunday evening, the PV Mudcats rallied twice from one-run deficits to edge Carmichaels, 3-2, at Carmichaels Area High School.

Bryce Snyder scored on Logan Rotruck’s base hit to left field in the top of the seventh inning for the go-ahead run for the Mudcats. Snyder doubled to left field and advanced to third on a groundout before crossing home plate with two outs.

Snyder pitched the final three innings to earn the win. He didn’t allow a run or hits while striking out four and not walking a batter.

The Copperheads (5-1) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Aaron Previsky was hit-by-pitch, stole second and scored when Gavin Pratt reached on an error for a 1-0 lead.

The Mudcats (5-0) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning on Landon McAlpine’s solo home run to left field on a 2-2 count after falling behind 0-2.

Carmichaels regained the lead in the bottom of the frame when Pratt walked on a full count with the bases loaded to score Alex Van Sickle for a 2-1 advantage. VanSickle had one of the Copperheads’ three hits, as he singled to center field to open the inning. Pratt and Previsky also had base hits.

Andino Vecchiolla and Dom Obiecunas drew walks in the fourth inning for the home team.

Mudcats starting pitcher Conner Tingler got out of the fourth inning by striking out the next two batters after Pratt’s base on balls. Tingler earned the no-decision, but allowed two runs (one earned) on one hits with six strikeouts and four walks.

The Mudcats’ Jordan Canby scored on Snyder’s sacrifice flyout to left field in the fifth inning for a 2-2 game.

Gianni Cantini had a strong performance despite taking the loss on the mound. He yielded three earned runs on seven hits over seven innings. He struck out 10 and walked three.

Wednesday, June 18

Carmichaels 6, Mill Run 5 – The Copperheads built a 6-0 then fended off a late Mill Run rally to hold on for a home victory in improving to 5-0 in a Fayette County Baseball League battle.

Andino Vecchiolla blasted a three-run homer in the first inning and Santino Marra smacked a solo shot in the third to put Carmichaels ahead 4-0.

The Copperheads got an RBI single from Hunter Mamie and Marra was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth to make it 6-0.

The Millers (0-4) got an unearned run in the sixth then pushed across four runs in the seventh. Marc Prinkey had a two-run single, Logan Kemp had a RBI hit and Grayden Gillott also had an RBI in the frame.

Drake Long came on in relief for Carmichaels and got the final three outs to earn the save.

Winning pitcher Matt Bramford allowed one unearned run on two hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in 5 â…” innings.

Matthew Miller took the loss.

Vecchiolla had two of the Copperheads’ five hits.

Luke Warrick was 2 for 2 for Mill Run.

Tuesday, June 17

Carmichaels 7, Charleroi 3 – Andino Vecchiolla’s two-run double sparked a six-run first inning that helped propel the Carmichaels Copperheads to a win over the visiting Charleroi Magicians in Fayette County Baseball League action.

Both teams entered the game with 3-0 records.

Carmichaels’ big first started with a one-out walk by Alex VanSickle and a single by Santino Marra. Noah Mildren hit an RBI double and Vecchiolla followed with a two-run double and then scored on an error to make it 4-0. Later in the inning Gianni Cantini hit a run-scoring single and Dom Colarusso was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cap the rally.

Mildren had two hits and VanSickle added a double for the Copperheads.

Winning pitcher Ethan Erhard allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 6 â…“ innings.

Colton Brightwell had two for the Magicians (3-1) who also got a two-run single from Jimmy Lanzi. Remington Lessman took the loss. Lorenzo Glasser pitched well in relief for Charleroi, surrendering just one run on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts in five innings.

Monday, June 16

Carmichaels 2, Oakland 1 – Andino Vecchiolla hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the top of the fourth inning and Gavin Pratt and Gianni Cantini combined on a four-hitter as the visiting Copperheads edged the Oaks in a Fayette County Baseball League game.

Pratt allowed one run on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings to earn the win. Cantini struck out five while giving one hin and one walk in two scoreless frames to pick up the save.

Carmichaels (3-0) took a 1-0 in the top of the first when Dom Colarusso singled, went to second on an error, took third on Aaron Previsky’s ground out and scored on Santino Marra’s single.

Oakland (2-3) tied it in the bottom of the inning when Wenkai Campbell singled, went to third on Alex Kennell’s double and scored on Joe Sneathen’s ground out.

Losing pitcher Ty Wickline went the distance, surrendering one earned run on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
