Local roundup: Maples fall to Frazier, 14-4
Dailan McManus was 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs as Frazier thumped visiting Mapletown, 14-4, in a five-inning, non-section baseball game last Friday.
Chase Fulmer doubled, singled and knocked in three runs for the Commodores (3-0).
Winning pitcher Dylan Kielbauch pitched all five innings, allowing four unearned runs with one walk and seven strikeouts, and also had a double and an RBI.
Spencer Yeager went 3 for 3 with an RBI and Ashtin Nellelroad doubled and singled for the Maples (1-2) who also got two hits from Ashton Walker and a double and two RBIs from Coltin Halbert.
Carson Vanata took the loss.
Waynesburg Central 7, Fort LeBoeuf 5 – Alex VanSickle had three hits and two RBIs in the Raiders’ non-section win over Fort LeBoeuf.
Tyler Groves delivered a double, single and two RBIs and earned the win in relief for Waynesburg (3-0) which also got a single and an RBI from Jake Stephenson.
Ethan Bliley had a double and two RBIs for the Bison (0-2).
Cameron (W.Va.) 9, West Greene 3 – Kason Angel homered, drove in two runs and was the winning pitcher in Cameron’s non-section win over the Pioneers.
Soier Reed had a triple and three RBIs for Cameron. Angel struck out 15 in tossing a two-hitter.
Wyatt Mooney singled and drove in a run for West Greene.
Softball
Charleroi 12, Mapletown 2 – Lyla Brunner had three RBIs as the Lady Cougars (1-1) triumphed over the Lady Maples in a non-section game.
Makenna Lotspeich and Treslee Weston each doubled for Mapletown (2-2).
College baseball
Allegheny 15, Waynesburg 0; Allegheny 11, Waynesburg 7 — The Yellow Jackets’ opening series in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play wasn’t the most memorable, as conference contender Allegheny swept a doubleheader at the Waynesburg University Baseball & Softball Complex on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
The Gators (7-7, 2-0 PAC) discord five runs in the sixth innings and sixth in the seventh to close out Game 1. Allegheny had 15 hits.
Waynesburg (4-14, 0-2 PAC) had three hits in Game 1, but McGuffey graduate Seth Burgdolt doubled in the first inning.
West Greene graduate Dalton Lucey yielded four earning runs through five innings, but allowed five earned in the sixth before exiting the game. He gave up 10 hits in 5 â…”.
The Gators had an 11-0 lead in the top of the seventh during Game 2, but the Yellow Jackets battled back to score three runs in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit to 11-3 and avoid the 10-run mercy rule.
Dalton Mount and Trent Giraffa both doubled in the seventh.
Waynesburg scored four runs in the ninth to cut the final deficit to four.
Kaden Flambard singled in two runs, advanced to second on the throw and third on an error before scoring on a base hit from Mount.
Allegheny turned a double play to end the game with the tying run in the hole.
Burgdolt was 3 for 5 and scored one run. Mount had two hits with an RBI and run scored. Giraffa and Aidan Williams had one RBI and run scored apiece.
Thursday, March 20
Carmichaels 7, California 7 – Dillon Fisher had two doubles and an RBI for Carmichaels in a seven-inning tie at California in non-section baseball action.
Ryder Kreig singled and drove in two runs for the Mikes (0-1-1) which also got two hits and an RBI from both Dayton Reynolds and Jordan Davis.
Caden Monticelli had two hits and two RBIs for the Trojans (0-1-1) and Parker Gillen singled and knocked in two runs.
Wednesday, March 19
Turkeyfoot Valley 10, Mapletown 8 – Ashton Walker, Ashtin Nesselroad and Sam Moritz each had three hits but the Maples fell to the Rams in a non-section baseball game.
Carson Vanata added a double and a single for Mapletown.
Softball
Waynesburg Central 17, Beth-Center 3 – Gina Tedrow homered and Kylee Schaum singled, doubled and tripled and knocked in three runs as the Lady Raiders defeated the Lady Bulldogs in a non-section game.
Aidan Snider drove in two runs with a double and a single for Waynesburg.
Jenna Pohill homered for Beth-Center which also got a triple from Kendall Welsh.
West Greene 16, Fort Cherry 0 – Kendra Tharp knocked in five runs with a homer and a double and Marissa Tharp also homered as the Lady Pioneers thumped the Lady Rangers in a four-inning non-section game.
Madelyn Roberts had three RBIs and winning pitcher Payton Gilbert three a one-hitter with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Tuesday, March 18
Jefferson-Morgan 7, California 2 – Dayten Marion’s go-head, two-run double highlighted a six-run seventh inning that lifted Jefferson-Morgan to a non-section baseball victory at California.
The Rockets (1-0) also got a two-run single by Deakyn Dehoet and a two-run double by Brayden Ellsworth later in the inning in helping coach John Curtis earn his 398th career win.
The Trojans (0-2) took the lead with two unearned runs in the second inning that included singles by Chase Shemansky and Chris Weston.
Brenton Barnhart’s RBI groundout in the fourth inning cut J-M’s deficit in half.
John Woodward earned the win with four scoreless innings in relief of starter Drew Adams. Woodward allowed two hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
Rickey Lawson doubled for the Trojans. Weston Monticelli took the loss.
Chartiers-Houston 7, Carmichaels 1 – Aaron Walsh had a double and two RBIs as the Bucs beat the host Mikes in a non-section game.
Paul Williamson and Justus Buckingham each also drove in two runs for Chartiers-Houston. Dominic Cumer was the winning pitcher.
Dayton Reynolds and Nathan Dursa had the lone hits for Carmichaels.
Mapletown 18, Clairton 8 – Austin Nesselroad was 4 for 4 with a double as the Maples hammered the Bears in a non-section game.
Winning pitcher Spencer Yeager tossed a complete game and helped his own cause with three hits. Mapletown also had eight stolen bases and got a double and two RBIs from Coltin Halbert.
Adonte Wiggins had three hits for Clairton.
Waynesburg Central 11, Toho (Fla.) 7 – Kory Taylor had three hits, including a double, and four RBIs in the Raiders’ non-section win over Toho in Florida.
Jake Stephenson had two hits and two RBIs and winning pitcher Troy Groves tripled and also knocked in two runs for Waynesburg. Groves allowed two earned runs in four innings with no walks and eight strikeouts.
The Raiders also got two RBIs from Daniel Turcheck.
Softball
Jefferson-Morgan 6, Frazier 4 – Brooklynne Snyder hit an RBI double and Addyson Teagarden and Gabby Marmie each delivered two hits and an RBI as the Lady Rockets upended the host Lady Commodores in a non-section game.
Frazier, which went undefeated at 12-0 during the 2024 regular season, got two hits and two RBIs from losing pitcher Addison Hiles and a double and an RBI from Grace Vaughn. Jayanna Ciferno chipped in with a single and an RBI for the Lady Commodores.
Winning pitcher Emilee Bazzoli gave up one earned run on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Washington 14, Mapletown 4 – The Lady Prexies defeated the Lady Maples in a five-inning, non-section game.
