Local roundup: Mikes earn key win over Avella, 11-3
Robbie Wilson-Jones was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Carmichaels scored in every inning on the way to a key Section 1-A baseball win over visiting Avella Monday.
Winning pitcher Colin Andrews gave up two earned runs with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings and Wilson-Jones recorded the final six outs for the Mikes (6-3, 9-4).
Carmichaels scored twice in the first then loaded the bases with none out in the second when Brayden Andrews walked, Parker Hewitt was hit by a pitch and Dayton Reynolds reached on a bunt single. Colin Andrews followed with a run-scoring single and Hewitt came home on an outfield error. Wilson-Jones’ sacrifice fly made it 5-0 and an error allowed another run to score for a 6-0 Mikes advantage.
Carmichaels added single runs in the third and fourth, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth.
Brayden Andrews had a single and two RBIs and Reynolds had two his and an RBI.
Losing pitcher Bryce Wright gave up four earned runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts in four innings.
Brayden Fuller had two hits for Avella (6-5, 10-5).
Waynesburg Central 2, Keystone Oaks 0 – Tyler Groves allowed one hit over 6 â…” scoreless innings and doubled and singled as the first-place Raiders blanked the host Golden Eagles in a Section 4-3A game.
Groves, who struck out seven and walked three, hit the pitch count with two outs in the seventh inning. Austin Surber relieved to record the final out and earn the save. CJ Corwin had two hits and an RBI and Jake Stephenson doubled and singled for the Raiders.
Waynesburg (9-0, 13-1) scored the only run it would need in the top of the fourth when Stephenson walked, stole second and came home on Kory Taylor’s single. Corwin’s RBI single made it 2-0 in the sixth.
Jack Hrivnak had the lone hit for Keystone Oaks (4-5, 7-6).
Greensburg Central Catholic 15, West Greene 0 – Tyler Samide knocked in two runs and was the winning pitcher as the first-place Centurions rolled past the Pioneers in a Section 1-A game.
Brody Bothell added three hits for GCC (7-1, 9-2).
The only two hits for West Greene (2-7, 3-11) were singles by Darren Knight and Lane Allison.
Jeannette 5, Mapletown 3 – Jayden Kennedy had two hits, two RBIs and was the winning pitcher as the Jayhawks (4-4, 6-7) fought off the Maples in a Section 1-A battle.
Lucas Stevenson and Josh Howard both had three hits for Mapletown (0-9, 2-11) which also got a double, single and two RBIs from Carson Vanata and two hits from Cam Shaffer.
Jefferson-Morgan 7, Chartiers-Houston 0 – John Woodward and Brayden Ellsworth combined on a four-hit shutout and Dayten Marion smacked a pair of triples and had two RBIs as the Rockets shut down the Buccaneers in a non-section game.
Woodward, who was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, gave up the four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in four innings to earn the win. Ellsworth finished up with three scoreless innings, walking none and striking out one, to earn the save and also contributed a double.
Drew Adams also doubled for J-M (10-3).
Josiah Moushlian doubled and singled for C-H (6-7).
Softball
Frazier 7, Waynesburg Central 3 – Grace Vaughn had three hits and two RBIs as the Lady Commodores took over sole possession of first place in Section 4-2A by defeating the host Lady Raiders.
Emme Travalena had two hit and an RBI for Frazier (7-1, 10-2) and winning pitcher Addison Hiles had a single and two RBIs. Hiles allowed three unearned runs on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Ellie Makel had a single and two RBIs for Waynesburg (6-2, 9-5) which also got two hits apiece from Bre Kerr and Avery Davis. Losing pitcher Gina Tedrow gave up 10 hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts.
Carmichaels 9, Beth-Center 1 – Bailey Barnyak threw a three-hitter with 17 strikeouts and no walks and added a double, single and two RBIs with the bat in the Lady Mikes’ Section 2-A game at Beth-Center.
Carys McConnell, Ke’Lana Chun and Ashton Batis each also had two hits and two RBIs for unbeaten Carmichaels (7-0, 11-0) which also got a pair of doubles and an RBI from Ali Jacobs.
Alli Lynch doubled in Kendall Welsh in the sixth inning for the lone run for B-C (2-6, 2-10), which also got a double from Sarah Bader. Hannah Belmont took the loss.
Avella 12, Mapletown 2 – Avrey Rado homered, Taylor Shirley tripled and Emily Buel doubled as the Lady Eagles triumphed over the Lady Maples.
Emma Johnson had four RBIs for Avella (3-5, 4-9).
Marley Shiflett had two hits for Mapletown (1-8, 3-11).
Friday, April 19
Waynesburg Central 8, California 0 — Gina Tedrow pitched a three-hit shutout in a Section 4-2A win for the Lady Raiders over the Lady Trojans.
Tedrow had 11 strikeouts and walked one to earn the victory in the pitching circle. Waynesburg (6-1, 9-4) scored two in the first inning, one in the second and five in the fourth.
Aidan Snider doubled for the Lady Raiders.
California’s Madyson Morton tripled.
Baseball
Carmichaels 10, Uniontown 0 — The Mikes’ Jase Zdravcky and Scottie Maskil combined for a four-hit shutout over six innings in non-section play.
Zdravcky earned the win after yielding two hits over the first four innings with three strikeouts and no walks. Maskil also allowed two hits with three strikeouts and no walks over two innings.
Robbie Wilson-Jones, Dillon Fisher and Jordan Davis doubled for Carmichaels (8-4).
Lucas Payton had two hits for the Red Raiders.
Thursday, April 18
Waynesburg Central 11, California 0 – Gina Tedrow threw a five-inning no-hitter in Waynesburg Central’s win over California in Section 4-2A softball action at Waynesburg.
Tedrow had 14 strikeouts and walked two in earning the victory in the pitching circle.
Avery Davis had two hits and knocked in three runs. Ellie Makel also had two hits, and added two RBIs.
Devon Moore had one hit and an RBI, as the Lady Raiders improved to 5-1 in section play and 8-4 overall.
Waynesburg is in contention with Frazier (6-1) and Brownsville (4-2) for the section championship. It beat the Lady Commodores (5-4) on April 14, but lost to the Lady Falcons (3-2) the next day.
Waynesburg scored three runs in the first and third innings, and one in the second for a 7-0 lead after three. The Raiders scored four in the bottom of the fifth to put the 10-run rule into effect.
Baseball
Jefferson-Morgan 14, Brownsville 2 — John Woodward hit two home runs in the Rockets’ non-section win over the Falcons at Jefferson-Morgan.
The Rockets (9-3) scored two runs in the first and nine in the third inning for an 11-0 lead. Brownsville (4-8) scored two in the top of the fourth before the Rockets added three more in the bottom of the frame.
After holding the Falcons off the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, the game was called due to the 10-year run.
Dayten Marion earned the pitching victory. Teammate Jaymison Robinson doubled.
Mapletown 24, Hundred, W.Va., 0 — The Maples scored early and often in a victory over the Hornets in Hundred, W.Va.
Carson Vanatata was 3 for 3 and hit a solo home run. Ashton Walker was 4 for 4 and Lucas Stevenson hit a three-run shot. Daniel Fox had four RBIs.
Ashtin Nesselroad had a no-hitter as Mapletown improved to 2-10.
Wednesday, April 16
Carmichaels 17, Avella 0 – Bailey Barnyak threw a no-hitter with no walks and 14 strikeouts and Kaitlyn Waggett tripled, doubled, singled and knocked in five runs as the Lady Mikes remained unbeaten with a Section 2-A win over the host Lady Eagles.
Ka’Lani Chun had two hits, including a home run, with four RBIs, Ali Jacobs had three hits, including a double and Avery Voithofer also had three hits for Carmichaels (6-0, 10-0), which also got a triple, single and three RBIs from Ashton Batis.
West Greene 11, Mapletown 2 – Payton Gilbert threw a two-hitter and with four walks and eight strikeouts as the Lady Pioneers earned a Section 2-A victory at Mapletown.
Kylee Davis had two hits and two RBIs and Kendra Tharp added two singles and an RBI for West Greene (6-1, 11-1) which also got two RBIs each from Katie Brudnock and Emmaline Beazell.
Marley Seward drove in both runs for the Lady Maples (1-6, 3-9) with a first-inning single. Mapletown’s only other hit was from Taniyah Spell. Cora Roberts took the loss.
Jefferson-Morgan 17, Beth-Center 3 – Brooklynne Snyder had three hits, including a triple, and Ashlynn Snyder and Addalei Larkin had four RBIs each as the Lady Rockets (3-3, 6-4) triumphed over the Lady Bulldogs in a Section 2-A game.
Jenna Pohill hit a triple for B-C (2-5, 2-9) which also got a double from Bella Stepp.
Baseball
Waynesburg Central 9, McGuffey 2 – Austin Surber had three hits, including a double, two RBIs and was the winning pitcher as the first-place Raiders knocked off the visiting Highlanders (4-4, 8-6) in Section 4-3A play.
Derek Turcheck had two hits, Tyler Groves had two RBIs and Grant Pack had a single and an RBI for Waynesburg (12-1, 8-0).
Surber surrendered two unearned runs on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Alex VanSickle tossed a scoreless seventh inning.
Jefferson-Morgan 20, Mapletown 4 – The Rockets scored eight runs in each of the first two innings in their four-inning, Section 1-A victory at Mapletown to extend their winning streak to seven games.
John Woodhard had three hits, including a double, and four RBIs and Jaymison Robinson also had three hits for J-M (7-3, 8-3) which also got a double, single and three RBIs from Dayten Marion, a double and a single from Brayden Ellsworth, two hits from Brenton Barnhart and a double and two RBIs from Liam Rogers.
Drew Adams was the winning pitcher.
Carson Vanata homered and Sam Moritz had two RBIs for the Maples (0-8, 0-10)
Carmichaels 4, Beth-Center 1 – Robbie Wilson-Jones had two hits, including a double, and an RBI and earned the save as the Mikes triumphed over the host Bulldogs in a non-section game.
Brayden Andrew also had two hits for Carmichaels (7-4) which got a double from Ryder Krieg and one RBI apiece from Colin Andrews, Dillon Fisher and Dayton Reynolds.
Andrews allowed one run on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts in five innings to earn the win. Wilson-Jones finished up with two scoreless frames with two walks and three strikeouts.
Losing pitcher Eli Wright surrendered one earned run on eight hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 5 â…” innings and also hit a double.
Jeannette 10, West Greene 3 – Noah Rattigan knocked in three runs with a triple and a double as the Jayhawks (3-4, 5-7) soared past the Pioneers in a Section 1-A game.
Xavier Lucey had a double and two RBIs for West Greene (2-6, 3-10).
Tuesday, April 15
Jefferson-Morgan 10, Mapletown 0 — John Woodward pitched a two-hitter over six innings, as the Rockets blanked the Mapletown in Section 1-1A play.
Woodward had 11 strikeouts and walked three in earning the pitching victory. He had two hits and drove in a run.
Deakyn DeHoet had two hits, including a double, for Jefferson-Morgan (6-3, 7-3).
Brayden Ellsworth had two singles and Jaymison Robinson knocked in two runs.
Waynesburg Central 12, McGuffey 1 — The Raiders remain perfect in Section 4-3A action following a victory over the Highlanders in five innings.
Tyler Groves earned the pitching victory after allowing two hits over five innings. He yielded one earned run with six strikeouts and four walks. Groves had two hits (one double) and drove in two runs.
Alex VanSickle tripled, doubled and had two RBIs for Waynesburg (7-0, 11-1). Teammate Jake Stephenson also had two hits, including a home run. He knocked in three runs.
Derek Turcheck tripled and had two RBIs for the Raiders. Teammate Austin Surber had two RBIs.
Jeannette 17, West Greene 2 — The Jayhawks scored 14 runs in the second inning en route to a Section 1-1A win over the Pioneers.
Jayden Kennedy earned the victory on the mound and had two doubles. Teammate Noah Sunder also doubled.
Jackson Grimes doubled for West Greene (2-5, 3-8).
Softball
Carmichaels 15, Mapletown 0 — Bailey Barnyak pitched a three-inning no-hitter in the Lady Mikes’ victory over the Lady Maples in Section 2-1A play.
The junior struck out seven of the 10 batters she faced. Her lone miscue was when she hit Mapletown’s Makenna Lotspeich with a pitch in the first inning with two outs.
Carmichaels (5-0, 9-0) spread the hitting around, as Barnyak, Kaitlyn Waggett, Ali Jacobs and Ke’Lani Chun had two hits apiece. Chun doubled and Jacobs tripled. Jacobs, Barnyak and Chun each drove in two runs.
Waynesburg Central 12, Washington 1 — Gina Tedrow did a little bit of everything in the Lady Raiders’ victory over the Lady Prexies in Section 4-2A play.
Tedrow earned the win in the pitching circle after allowing one earned run on one hit over five innings. She struck out 11 and walked two.
Tedrow was just as effective at the plate in going 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs.
Teammates Eva Pester, Kalee Piper, Ellie Makel, Bre Kerr and Avery Davis each had one double apiece. Pester added a triple and single.
Waynesburg Central improved to 4-1 in section play and 7-4 overall.
Tateionna Warren tripled for Washington.
