Raiders advance with win over Freeport; Lady Raiders fall
Tyler Groves recovered after a shaky first inning on the mound and helped himself out with his bat as Waynesburg Central defeated Freeport, 6-2, in a WPIAL Class 3A first-round baseball playoff game last Thursday at Gateway High School.
Groves gave up run-scoring singles to Chase Walker and Kason Barker in the first inning but shut out the Yellowjackets (13-7) the rest of the way in pitching a complete game. He gave up one earned run on four hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.
Groves also tripled, singled and scored twice.
The fourth-seeded, Section 4 champion Raiders (16-3) advanced to Tuesday’s quarterfinals where they were slated to meet No. 5 South Park in a 7 p.m. game at Peterswood Park.
Waynesburg scored once in the second inning on Kory Taylor’s sacrifice fly then surged in front to stay with a four-run fourth that included a run-scoring double by Jake Stephenson and RBI singles by Grant Pack and C.J. Corwin.
Ethan Kiger capped the scoring with a run-scoring grounder in the fifth.
Austin Surber had two hits for Waynesburg.
Softball
Riverside 14, Waynesburg Central 4 – The Lady Panthers built a 12-0 lead on their way to eliminating the Lady Raiders in a five-inning WPIAL Class 2A first-round playoff game at North Allegheny.
Saeryn Hoover had three hits, including a double, for Riverside (8-9) which also got doubles from Addie Burry and Emma Stockman.
Kolbi Rastoka hit a triple for Waynesburg (11-9) which also got a double from Bria Stephenson.
Joci Cummings was the winning pitcher. Gina Tedrow took the loss.
