Tyler Groves recovered after a shaky first inning on the mound and helped himself out with his bat as Waynesburg Central defeated Freeport, 6-2, in a WPIAL Class 3A first-round baseball playoff game last Thursday at Gateway High School.

Groves also tripled, singled and scored twice.

The fourth-seeded, Section 4 champion Raiders (16-3) advanced to Tuesday’s quarterfinals where they were slated to meet No. 5 South Park in a 7 p.m. game at Peterswood Park.

Waynesburg scored once in the second inning on Kory Taylor’s sacrifice fly then surged in front to stay with a four-run fourth that included a run-scoring double by Jake Stephenson and RBI singles by Grant Pack and C.J. Corwin.

Ethan Kiger capped the scoring with a run-scoring grounder in the fifth.
