Local roundup: Waynesburg Central golfers improve to 8-0

Austin Surber fired a 1-under-par 34 as each Waynesburg Central golfer shot under 40 in a Section 3-2A victory over visiting Bentworth, 178-208, at Rohanna’s Golf Course on Aug. 28.

Rykan Gustafson was right behind Surber with a 35, Lucas Slifko and Jarett Tretinik both shot 36 and Cole Headlee carded a 37 for the unbeaten Raiders (7-0, 8-0).

Sam Wade shot 40 for the Bearcats (1-6, 2-7). Also scoring for the Bearcats were Craig McDonald (41), Trent Wolpink (42), Jeremy Bland (42) and Wyatt Snyder (43).

Jefferson-Morgan 216, Brownsville 234 – Urijah Teasdale shot a 38 to secure medalist honors while helping the host Rockets defeat the Falcons in a Section 3-2A match at Carmichaels Golf Club.

Miles Sowden and Dom Sowden shot 40 and 41 for Jefferson-Morgan (5-1, 5-1) which also got a 48 from Jamison Robinson and a 49 from both Brayden Ellsworth and Trent Sowden, one of which was dropped.

Ben Vojacek and Ava Rohland led Brownsville (1-5, 1-5) with 41s. They were followed by Dom Capan (45), Cooper Cetera (51) and Adam Vojacek (56).

Carmichaels 210, Beth-Center – Eli Hastings shot a 1-over-par 38 and Connor Lapana was right behind with a 38 in the Mikes’ Section 2-3A win over the visiting Bulldogs at Carmichaels Golf Club.

Rounding out the scoring for Carmichaels (4-3, 4-4) were Chase Ankrom (42), Jayden Kerley (44) and Copper Richards (47).

Evan Lowman carded a 44 and Parker Amos turned in a 45 to lead B-C and were followed by Greyson Solesto (47), Austin Kurowski (48) and Jacob Nopwaskey (48).

Girls volleyball

Mapletown 3, Geibel Catholic 2 — The Lady Maples edged the Lady Gators in the decisive fifth set, 15-13, to earn the non-section win at Mapletown Junior/Senior High School.

Mapletown had a 25-15 win in the first set before Geibel won the second, 25-22. The visitors had a 25-18 victory in the third set before the Lady Maples earned a 25-23 triumph in the fourth set.

Rowan Eisiminger had 17 kills and eight aces for Mapletown (2-0). Teammate Isabella Greenwood had five aces. Leona Liggett had five aces and three digs for the home team.

The Lady Maples’ Marley Shiflett had 38 assists and five aces. Sophia Vanata had five kills and two aces, and Treslee Weston contributed for the victors with 14 kills and two aces.

The Gators dropped to 1-2 this season.

Waynesburg Central 3, Quaker Valley 0 — The Lady Raiders earned a sweep in non-section play at Waynesburg Central High School.

Waynesburg won by set scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 28-26.

Ani Cree had 15 kills and 10 digs. Chatham Knight added 18 assists and six digs. Gina Tedrow chipped in with 17 assists and four digs.

The Lady Raiders’ Emily Rafferty had 12 kills and nine digs. Teammate Emily Bochna had six kills, four digs and three aces.

Waynesburg improved to 2-0 in overall play.

Boys soccer

Charleroi 10, Waynesburg Central 2 — Dylan Klinger scored four goals in the Cougars’ Section 4-2A win over the Raiders at Myron Pottios Stadium.

Teammate Blake Pendo had a hat trick.

Brendan Cole scored both goals for Waynesburg.

Girls soccer

Waynesburg Central 3, Yough 1 — The Lady Raiders had three separate goal scorers in a non-section victory over the Lady Cougars at Raider Field.

Tess Pauley, Emily Rafferty and Kolbi Rastoka scored for the home team in their first match of the season.

Pauley and Rylei Rastoka added assists.

Marty Uhler Invite — West Greene’s Joel Grimes finished 24th with a time of 19:32.5 Saturday in the 53rd Annual Marty Uher Invite at Roadman Park on the campus of PennWest California.

Wednesday, Aug. 27

Jefferson-Morgan 221, Carmichaels 237 – Urijah Teasdale shot a 1-over-par 37 to earn medalist honors in the Rockets’ Section 3-2A boys golf victory over the visiting Mikes at Greene County Country Club.

Also scoring for J-M (4-2, 4-3) were Brayden Ellsworth (43), Trenton Sowden (46), Jaymison Robinson (47) and Miles Sowden (48).

Eli Hastins paced Carmichaels (3-3, 3-4) with a 45 and was followed by Jayden Kerley (47), Connor Lapana (48), Cooper Richards (48) and Anthony Post (49).

Waynesburg Central 199, Beth-Center 234 – Rykan Gustafson and Austin Surber each shot a 4-over-par 37 to share medalist honors and help the Raiders remain undefeated with a Section 3-2A win over visiting Beth-Center at Rohanna’s Golf Course.

Jarett Tretnik was one shot behind the leaders with a 38 for Waynesburg (6-0, 7-0) which also got a 42 from Cole Headlee and a 45 from Matt Eisimenger.

Austin Kurowski was the top golfer for the Bulldogs (1-6, 1-7) with a 44 while Parker Amos, Jacob Nopwaskey and Ryan Krosko each turned in a 47. Evan Lowman had a 49.

Tuesday, Aug. 26

Waynesburg Central 3, Derry Area 3 — Brendan Cole had a hat-trick for the Raiders, but the Trojans also scored three goals in a draw in Section 4-2A boys soccer play at Waynesburg Stadium.

Both teams earned a point in their first match of the season.

Girls volleyball

Waynesburg Central 3, Albert Gallatin 1 — The Lady Raiders earned a sweep in non-section action.

The set scores were 25-12, 25-22 and 25-18.

Waynesburg’s Ani Cree had 14 kills, five digs and three aces. Teammate Gina Tedrow had 13 assists and eight digs. Chatham Knight also had 13 assists.

Emily Rafferty chipped in with 11 digs and eight kills for the Lady Raiders (1-0).

Waynesburg’s Harper Grimes (6 kills, 3 digs) and Lelia McCollum (15 digs, 2 aces) also contributed to the Lady Raiders’ victory.

Monday, Aug. 25

McGuffey 217, Carmichaels 225 — Josh Rusmisel shot an-even par 37 in the Highlanders’ triumph over the Mikes in Section 2-3A boys golf action at Carmichaels Golf Club.

McGuffey’s Logen Hughes finished 1-over before Carmichaels’ Connor Lapana came in at 39. Teammate Eli Hastings carded a 41.

The Mikes’ Chase Ankrom and Cooper Richards shot 48, and Anthony Post and Jayden Kerley each had 49s.

The Highlanders’ Landon Hatfield fired a 44. Dominic Amos (47) and Noah Sibert (51) closed the scoring for McGuffey (3-1, 5-2).

Carmichaels dropped to 3-2 in section play and 3-3 overall.

Waynesburg 232, Brownsville 296 – Cole Headless took medalist honors with a 4-over-par 37, Matt Eisininger followed with a 38 and Jarret Tretinik, Lucas Shifko and Austin Surber each turned in a 39 as the Raiders’ well-balanced scoring propelled them to a Section 3-2A win over the Falcons.

Ben Vojacek led Brownsville with a 41 and was followed by Ava Rohland (42), Dom Capan (45), Adam Vojacek (54) and Hunter McDonald (56).

Girls volleyball

Mapletown 3, Turkeyfoot 0 – Rowan Eisiminger rang up four kills and six aces in the Lady Maples’ non-section victory over the Lady Rams by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-14.

Treslee Weston had a team-high six kills for Mapletown (1-0) which also got eight aces from Leah Williamson and 11 assists from Marley Shiflett.
