DUNBAR TWP. — Despite a luau theme this year, it might be in bad “taste” to breathe a word about a pig roast at the Pigs Gone Wild event at the Fayette County Fair.

For many years, racing pigs have been hamming it up at the Fayette County Fair, first as Nancy HerringĢƵ Racing Pigs and now under the wing of Jill Jackson Matiyasic.

“They (the pigs) are the only show that can be found just at this fair and the only show to come every year,” said Jackson Matiyasic.

Even though racing pigs have been a part of the fair for several years, the excitement continues to thrive.

One thing that gets racing spectators super excited is the possibility of winning one of the coveted Pigs Gone Wild T-shirts. The only way a fan can walk away with a shirt is if their pig comes in first or second place in the race.

Each year Jackson Matiyasic comes up with a different theme for the races. This year, she was inspired by her desire to take a vacation to a tropical beach and enjoy a luau.

Like last year, the pig races are a powder puff league featuring all female pigs as hula piggies, complete with grass skirts and coconut bikini tops.

One lucky participant, 7-year-old Kayli Redmond of Scottdale, received a T-shirt after her yellow hula piggy took first prize.

“It was our first time (seeing the racing pigs),” said Amanda Redmond, mother of Kayli Redmond.

“We came down here after a friend recommended it to us.”

Kayli said she felt good when she saw she had won, and attributes her pigĢƵ first-place finish to her great cheerleading skills.

Guests to the fair can cheer on their favorite speeding swine at the Family Area each day at 4:15, 6:15 and 8:15 p.m.
