Lemont Furnace man charged in alleged threat
A Lemont Furnace man is facing a single charge for disorderly conduct after police allege he alluded to a threat of gun violence at the Social Security Administration building and also the Fayette County Public Assistance office, both in Uniontown, Tuesday morning.
Uniontown police Officer John Kauer said Stephen Yuhaniak was charged by Magisterial District Judge Michael M. Metros with disorderly conduct following the incident.
Kauer said the incident occurred when Yuhaniak hinted to bringing a gun into the Social Security office while meeting with representatives at the office. He also told employees at the Social Security office that he could take a gun to the public assistance office, too, Kauer said.
“Basically, he alluded to a gun threat, in that, he said something to the effect of, ‘Do you have to bring a gun in here’ to get resolved whatever it was that had him perturbed,” city police Chief Jason A. Cox said.
When police learned of the alleged threat, Kauer officers responded to both offices to speak with representatives about the incident and a third contingency of officers responded to YuhaniakĢƵ home.
Uniontown officers, assisted by state constables and the police reserves, surrounded the residence and took Yuhaniak into custody without incident, Kauer said.
Cox said that every threat, especially threats involving gun violence, even if only intimated, are handled with extreme care.
“In an instance like this, we take every precaution to ensure the welfare of area residents as well as our officers,” Cox said. “We also want to make it very clear that it is never acceptable to come into a federal office and make threats of this nature or threats of any nature, for that matter. However, in this case, when we spoke with the gentleman regarding his comments and actions, we made an assessment of his mental state as well as an appraisal of his capability to act upon such threats and then decided on the appropriate charges.”
