Rain cancels truck pull at Bullskin fair, other activities go on
BULLSKIN TWP. — MondayĢƵ rain showers forced organizers of the 82nd annual Bullskin Township Community Fair to cancel the truck pulling contest, but it didn’t washout the remaining activities.
“It did the (outdoor) arena more harm than good,” said Sam Glassburn, honorary fair association member.
Glassburn said he wasn’t sure if the contest would be rescheduled later in the week.
The rain was also to blame in part for the lack of entries, that Judy Shearer, exhibitor, said was down from previous years.
On the other hand, Buzz and Mary Herman of Mount Pleasant, who attend the fair each year with their children and grandchildren, welcomed the cooler temperatures brought on by the rain.
“After this hot weather it feels nice,” said Mary Herman.
In the grange building, the queen contest and Westmoreland Squares Youth Squaredancers took to the stage drawing a sizable crowd.
Chelsey Hall, a junior at Connellsville Area High School, became this yearĢƵ queen with the crown passed down by Amanda Fabian who won in 2010.
Hall, the daughter of Mark and Tara Hall, was one of three girls ages 14 to 18 that vied for the title with each judged on their introductions, modeling, answering an impromptu question and knowledge of Bullskin Township.
Hall said she was surprised, but also excited to take on the role of representing Bullskin.
“I want to show people what Bullskin is about,” said Hall.
Hall added that Greenlick Dam is her favorite landmark since it is situated on a farm that was formerly owned by her grandfather.
Hall, who also lives on a farm, is involved in 4-H and has been riding horses from the time she was six-years-old.
The Westmoreland Squares were a new addition to this yearĢƵ fair having competed for the last sixth years in the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.
The group if comprised of people from Westmoreland County ages five to 20 that are members or alumni of various 4-H clubs.
They dance to all genres of music from country to the big band era and even nursery rhymes.
The fair continues today at 9 a.m. with judging of all products and livestock. A horse pulling contest is slated for 5 p.m. followed by an ATV 4-wheeler obstacle course at 7 p.m., both in the outdoor arena.
At 7:30 p.m. Patsy and Friends will provide entertainment.
