Rescue crews recovered the body of a 23-year old drowning victim Tuesday evening from the Youghiogheny River at Yough River Park in Connellsville. Personnel from Connellellsville police, New Haven Hose Company, and Scottdale Volunteer Fire Department dive team assisted in the recovery. The cause is under investigation.

CONNELLSVILLE — The body of a man who drowned in the Youghiogheny River at Yough River Park in Connellsville was recovered Tuesday night.

Rescuers recovered the body after about an hour of searching.

According to officials, the victim was identified as Joshua Friend, 23, of Uniontown. He went missing around 8 p.m.

Initial reports were that the man was swimming in the river with his girlfriend when the drowning occurred.

Conflicting reports as to whether or not the man had jumped off the pier into the river were received, with reports also received that the man may have been swimming when he drowned.

Emergency personnel searched for about 20 minutes before changing the search from rescue to recovery.

The manÄ¢¹½ÊÓÆµ body was found on the east side of the Youghiogheny River near the pier in the area where he allegedly went missing.

A member of the Scottdale Dive Team located the body, with New Haven Hose Fire Co. using their boat to help extricate the body from the river.

The Fayette County CoronerÄ¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Office responded to the scene.

A Fayette EMS rehabilitation unit responded and provided lighting and additional items for firefighters.

In addition, the Scottdale Volunteer Fire Department also responded as did Connellsville Police Department.
