McCrae released by Steelers
Terrence McCrae was released by the Steelers Tuesday morning, but his dream of playing for his hometown professional football team may not be over.
McCrae, a Vanderbilt native and Connellsville graduate, tried out for the Steelers as an undrafted rookie free agent wide receiver from Ohio University.
He was released as the team got down to the NFL-mandated 80-man roster limit. Final cuts must be made by 4 p.m. Saturday.
McCrae may rejoin the Steelers as early as Sunday. He may be claimed by any other NFL team until then.
On Sunday, the Steelers and all NFL teams will assemble their practice squads. The Steelers may decide to sign McCrae to their practice squad and he could remain there throughout the 2011 season.
If another team claims him from the practice squad, the new team must put McCrae on its active roster.
McCrae could be activated from the Steelers practice squad to the active roster at any time during the season. For example, if any member of the Steelers active roster were to suffer a season-ending injury, that player would be moved to the injured reserve list and McCrae could be signed to the active roster to replace the injured player.
