Mill Run gets by Dunbar, 7-3
?CONNELLSVILLE TWP. — Mill Run did just enough Thursday evening to beat Dunbar, 7-3, to move above the .500 mark in Fayette County Baseball League play.
Mill Run (10-9) was helped along by Dunbar as it drew eight walks to go with their six hits. Greg Welsh had two of the six hits, while Matt White drove in two runs.
“I told the guys this was not one our better games,” Mill Run manager Ray Orndorff said. “Dunbar had a bad first inning that we took advantage of and we got little run production in the sixth. Other than that we didn’t do a whole lot today.”
Mill Run took advantage of four walks in the first inning to put up three runs. Dennis Show led off the game receiving the first of his four walks on the day. Nick Lattanzo and Colvin Adey received walks to load the bases. Kris FirestoneĢƵ ground ball to third drove in Show while Lattanzo was forced at third.
Alex Kesler got a walk to load the bases again. Matt WhiteĢƵ ground ball to second drove in Adey. Keslar was tagged out going to second on the play the throw to first to get White was wide, allowing Firestone to score.
Dunbar (1-13) got a run back in the bottom of the first. When Cody Ward scored on an error at third on a ball hit by Jake Swink.
Mill Run added another run in the fourth. Show singled and stole second. He moved to third on an error at short and scored on AdeyĢƵ groundout to second.
Dunbar came back to close to within one in the bottom of the fifth. With one out Ward was safe on an error at short. Tyler Domer was hit by a pitch putting two on. Alex Fogle connected on a triple to right driving in both runs. Winning pitcher Kevin Bell retired the next batters, stranding Fogle at third, leaving the score at 4-3.
“WhatĢƵ costing us ballgames is that we are beating ourselves,” Dunbar manager Jeff McWilliams said. “We left a runner at third that could have tied the game. We’re not getting the key hits when we need them.”
Mill Run added another run in the sixth when Show walked and managed to move himself to third and scored on an error at third. They tacked on two more runs in the seventh with White and John Malone providing run-producing singles.
Mill Run will play at Pasta Lorenzo today and Sunday while Dunbar has a double-header with Belmont, Saturday.
