PSP Troop B Commander Epstein retires
Capt. Sheldon Epstein, the retired commander of the state police unit that covered most of southwestern Pennsylvania, was honored at a recent Fraternal Order of Police luncheon.
?Epstein was the commander of Troop B, which covers all of Fayette, Greene and Washington counties and parts of Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. The state police station in Washington County is the troop headquarters.
Greene County District Attorney Marjorie Fox said Epstein served with dedication and enthusiasm.
“He applied himself to achieve a scholarly understanding of the law he enforced and exhibited a compassionate commitment to his fellow officers and their families, most notably in his organization of the annual memorial service dedicated to fallen officers. We wish him the best in his retirement,” Fox said, noting that Epstein served two stints at the Waynesburg station.
Epstein graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and played football there, Fox said.
He worked at a patrolman for the Connellsville Police Department before joining the state police in the 1980s.
Epstein was a trooper and then a corporal at a Troop S station in Mercer County and the Washington station.
He served as a corporal at the Waynesburg station before he was promoted to sergeant and stationed at the bureau of training and education in Meadville.
Epstein returned to Waynesburg as a sergeant and then became the lieutenant and commander of the Troop B station in Pittsburgh.
His next assignment was in the bureau of patrol in Harrisburg as a captain before he was named Troop B commander.
