MENALLEN TWP. — Along with continuing construction of the highway itself, the second phase of the Uniontown-to-Brownsville section of the Mon/Fayette Expressway involves building a $13 million maintenance complex.

Work on the Searight maintenance complex is progressing, along with the road project.

According to Mike Houser, engineer project manager of the western regional office for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, the project consists of more than just construction of a maintenance building.

Included is a 20,091-square-foot section maintenance building, a 22,258-square-foot building for truck and equipment storage, a 1,911-square-foot building to house an emergency generator, electric utilities, fire pump and trash/recycling and a 1,400-square-foot canopy to protect the fuel island.

Houser said the project is divided into four prime contracts. The general contract was awarded to Mosites Construction of Pittsburgh in the amount of $9.5 million. The contract for electrical work was awarded to Power Contracting Inc. of Pittsburgh for $1.7 million.

Plumbing work is being done by McKamish Inc. of Pittsburgh in the amount of $874,700. McKamish Inc. also received a $975,000 contract for heating, ventilation and air conditioning work.

The project is slated for completion in May and is on schedule.

The building is designed as a “green building” and is incorporating the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEEDĢƵ) concept.

The West Virginia portion of the Mon/Fayette Expressway recently opened, as well as the last section in Pennsylvania from Fayette County heading toward West Virginia.

The maintenance complex will service the Uniontown-to-Brownsville expressway section, which is about 17 miles long. The entire link is slated to open in the spring after completion of the bridge over the Monongahela River that will connect Fayette and Washington counties.

The first phase of the project included construction of 7.5 miles of highway, construction of four miles of other local roads and contracts totaling more than $197 million.

For the current phase, there are six contracts, including 7.7 miles of new highway, with contract bid amounts at $306.6 million.
