?A Fayette County man is in critical condition at a West Virginia hospital after losing control of his motorcycle near his home in Redstone Township Friday afternoon.

Dave Winters, 41, who was identified by his father and a neighbor, was not wearing a helmet, according to state police. The crash occurred at 3:39 p.m. and closed both lanes of Route 40 from the Grindstone Foodland to Davidson Siding Road for two hours.

The state police Records and Identification unit was called to investigate the cause of the accident, which occurred in front of Winters’ home on Route 40 just west of Volek Avenue. Winters was heading east at the time of the accident.

“The bike traveled about 60 yards without a driver,” said John Duke, Republic Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief.

The motorcycle flipped when it crossed the road and struck a stone culvert, landing on the far side of Volek Avenue.

The front tire of the motorcycle was blown and there were scrape marks on the rear fender. The seat also came off of the cycle.

“HeĢƵ an experienced bike rider,” said Rick McLay, who lives next door to Winters and his parents. “Dave has a bunch of bikes, three or four. When they say something happened to the bike, I believe that.”

Duke said a landing zone for Stat MedEvac was set up at the former Brownsville Tri-County Hospital site and flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. Because the accident was initially believed to have involved multiple vehicles, Brownsville Ambulance Service Inc., Fayette EMS and Uniontown Ambulance were dispatched to the scene.

In addition to the state police and Republic firefighters, firefighters from Brownsville No. 1 (North Side), Grindstone and Allison 1 responded to the call.
