Blue Mountain holds off Pasta Lorenzo, 6-3
Blue Mountain and Pasta Lorenzo played under threatening, darkening skies Thursday night, and the umpires finally gave way to the conditions in the bottom of the fifth inning after Blue Mountain held off a late rally for a 6-3 road victory.
“When the game started, it was nice and the field was in perfect shape,” said Blue Mountain manager Richard Krause. “There were a few little drops, but the weather seemed to go around.”
After three scoreless innings, Blue Mountain finally broke through with two runs, helped by three Pasta Lorenzo errors.
Blue MountainĢƵ Chuck Gasti scored the first run when an unintentional hit-and-run led to an infield throwing error, allowing him to come home from first base. The second run was also the result of an error.
The visitors added much-needed insurance runs in the top of the fifth, as the skies darkened.
Brian Coleman had the big hit of the inning when he drove home two with a double to make it 4-0. Coleman was eventually thrown out at the plate, but J.W. Kayla made it safely home on a wild pitch for a 5-0 lead.
Krause was trying to get through the inning so the game would be official.
“You could see the impending storm. We suspected it was going to be it,” said Krause.
The home teamĢƵ bats came alive under darkening skies, rallying for three runs and the tying run on first base.
Cody Cross led off with a single and moved to third on Jojo MaldonadoĢƵ double. Both scored on Ken MuskoĢƵ double for a 6-2 score.
Taylor made it through one out of the fifth, giving way to Joby Lapkowicz. A bases-loaded walk with two outs scored Musko, but Lapkowicz secured his first save and preserved TaylorĢƵ first win with the third out.
Taylor struck out two and walked one for the win, while Lapkowicz struck out one and walked one.
Sam Bashioum went the distance, allowing seven hits while striking out five and walking three.
Pasta Lorenzo had 11 hits, including Scott HrubyĢƵ three singles.
Blue Mountain (5-2) plays Bud MurphyĢƵ on Monday.
