Mayers dominates in Uniontown Legion win
?HOPWOOD — Uniontown pounded out 17 hits and collected its 11th win of the season by defeating Carmichaels 17-3 in Fayette American Legion baseball action Wednesday evening at Hutchinson Field.
Uniontown coach Scott DeBerry said that he likes the way his team has been playing the last few games and notes that confidence has a lot to do with his clubĢƵ success.
“Earlier in the year, I don’t think we had any confidence,” DeBerry said. “But we were able to put a couple of wins together, and that changed the attitude of our team. You got to figure that a lot of the high schools around the area struggled this spring, and it just took time to build that winning attitude.”
In the first Uniontown (11-4) got run-producing hits from Tyler Dubovich, Bobby King and Adam Crayton.
Max Beatly and Jake Riddell scored on passed balls in the second to make the score 5-0. Beatly and Riddell are the one and two hitters for Uniontown and continued their hot streak at the plate with a combined five hits and five runs scored.
“Max and Jake do a great job for us at the top of the lineup,” DeBerry said. “I’m to the point now that I expect those two to reach base every time they go up. They give me a lot of options such as hit-and-runs and being more aggressive stealing. Those two have great intensity; they set the table for our offense.”
Later in the second, King collected another RBI single and Dubovich scored on an infield error by Carmichaels (4-8) to make it 7-0.
Uniontown doubled up Carmichaels in the third with seven runs. Ed Dutkewycz collected a two-run single, while CraytonĢƵ double chased in two more runs.
Beatly, Riddell and Mason Fordyce also added RBI base knocks in the inning.
In the fourth Uniontown got another RBI two-bagger from Crayton and an RBI groundout by Mike Bochnak.
Despite the offensive explosion by the home team, the story of the game was the dominant pitching performance by Tyler Mayers. Mayers mixed up his pitches well in the contest and registered 10 strikeouts.
“Tyler has thrown well for us all year long,” DeBerry said. “Every time I put him out there, he always battles and gives us a chance to win. Today, he kept the ball down and his curveball was getting a lot of strikeouts. Typically he is a ground ball pitcher, but today he froze a lot of batters with his curve.”
Carmichaels broke up Mayers’ shutout bid with three runs in the fifth, courtesy of a Uniontown fielding error and RBI singles by Nick Clarke and Antonio Farrar.
Jon Krall was tagged with the loss for Carmichaels, while Brandon Kozich and Kody Decker saw time on the mound in relief.
“We got to get better fundamentals,” Carmichaels skipper Rick Grim said. “Sometimes that is what it comes down too. When you come to games with nine or 10 guys, thatĢƵ not going to cut it. We have to just keep practicing and get right mentally on the field.”
Both squads will be back in action on Friday, as Carmichaels hosts a doubleheader with Charleroi and Uniontown travels to Farmington.
