Brownsville woman charged in assault
A Brownsville woman is facing multiple charges after police allege she assaulted a probation officer in Uniontown on Monday.
Mary Jo Smith, 44, of 434 Snowden Terrace, was charged with resisting arrest, aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct following the incident at the Fayette County 911 building.
Uniontown police Officer Jennifer Field said Smith had reported to the 911 building to speak with a probation officer and that upon learning that she was going to be taken into custody for violating the terms of her probation, she became combative.
Field said Smith, who also uses the name Mary Jo Kuhns, elbowed probation officer Breann Barreca in the face and struck other probation officers with her hands and feet in an attempt to avoid being detained.
Field said Barreca suffered an injury to her right cheek as a result of the scuffle.
In June, Smith was sentenced by Fayette County Judge Steve P. Leskinen to six months house arrest followed by 17 months of probation after pleading guilty to retail theft charges filed last August.
On Monday, she was placed in Fayette County Prison on $7,500 straight cash bond following her arraignment. Smith will face a preliminary hearing at a later date before Magisterial District Judge Michael M. Metros.
