Budget-friendly ways to update your home for holidays

Creating a dazzling home for guests during the holiday season with refreshing updates can be easy and affordable without breaking your budget.

According to Do-It-Yourself (DIY) network, simple cosmetic changes such as new lighting and window treatments or even hardware can transform the look of any room.

“New kitchen lights or a new fixture over the dining table is sure to brighten up any holiday meal,” according to the DIY website.

The addition of chair rail, picture molding, crown molding or baseboard can also make an impact.

“ItĢƵ simple and easy and gives a more classic look to your house,” said interior designer Joyce Stewart of Uniontown, owner of Stewart Design Studio.

On the outside, Stewart said repainting the entry door a bold color like bright red or teal makes the house stand out and also adds curb appeal. “People will definitely compliment you on it or stir some conversation over it,” she added.

Stewart said another idea to brighten a home is to place solar lights in landscaping or along a pathway.

Festive bows and disposable decorations, said Stewart, are easy compliments.

With the kitchen the busiest room in the house, DIY suggests checking your dinnerware to see if it needs replaced and if additional cookware is needed for preparing extra food.

For $100 or less, DIY found you can spruce up the kitchen backsplash with a tin tile.

In the living room, simple slipcovers can revitalize worn-out furniture or try coordinating mismatched pieces.

Less time-consuming, less costly, and more adaptable than new upholstery, Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) found that slipcovers provide an instant style update and can create a fresh face for your room from season to season.

A coat of paint makes for a simple transformation in any room.

Classics such as dark colors and wrought-iron decor are making a comeback over contemporary stye, according to Stewart.

“ItĢƵ going back to the Norman Rockwell Christmas where everything is pretty and scenic like the black lamppost with the wreath on it,” she said.

A guest bath or powder room can be given a face-lift with a new faucet, towel bars, cabinet hardware, mirror, and robe hooks, according to BHG.

Stewart recommended to give the bathroom a good deep clean and possibly new caulking around the sink and bath tub to keep it fresh, clear and free of mold.

Hang a new shower curtain or add a small area rug to an outdated bathroom as a finishing touch.

If you’re hosting overnight guests, Stewart suggested buying a cheap book shelf or serving cart and topping it with a coffee pot, a few mugs and some tea bags to help create a comfortable suite.

A decorative basket filled with common household amenities such as travel size soaps, shampoos and toothbrushes can also make your guests feel at home.

Stewart added that fresh towels and washcloths are a must.

When it comes to attracting guests with festive decor, Stewart said to go for dollar store items and cluster them in groups using them in a way you normally wouldn’t.

“These are little inexpensive things you can do,” said Stewart.
