Time to turn over a new leaf with fall decorating
With the arrival of fall, itĢƵ time to turn over a new leaf and create a warm and inviting entrance to your house by decorating with colorful hues of red, orange, yellow and brown inspired by the season.
Gourds set a festive tone while greenery, mums, cornstalks, hay and even pine cones can add a lot of pizazz. Burlap is also trending.
Steve Neubauer, owner of NeubauerĢƵ Flowers and Market House at 34 E. Church St., Uniontown, said he is seeing that people are using the natural elements of a fall harvest to inspire decorating their front porch for the season.
Neubauer said colors associated with traditional decor, such as pumpkins, cornstalks and burlap, are popular, but this year people are decorating with more monochromatic colors like green, beige and tan.
“You’re seeing more heirloom gourds, pumpkins and those types of things becoming more readily available that are giving more color and great texture,” said Neubauer. “People are going more to a swag instead of the traditional wreath just to change it up a bit and give their home a unique entry.”
NeubauerĢƵ also extends its floral expertise to decorating homes during the holidays while creating one-of-a-kind and custom items.
For the most part, Neubauer said a lot of customers take on decorating the fall items the purchase as a family project. “We give suggestions and recommendations on how they can put it together.”
Mums are also a popular mainstay of the season requiring little to no maintenance, said Neubauer. “It takes me back to our familyĢƵ roots.”
For those who want to make a statement, Better Homes and Gardens website recommends stuffing the bottoms of vintage baskets with newspaper and filling them with fresh apples. Attach dried cornstalks to porch posts with wire hidden under burlap, then use Indian corn, gourds, and vintage rakes and pitchforks to add to a harvest theme.
Pots of red mums and red fall leaves add vibrant color, straw bales add layered height, and a front door wreath brings the natural look together.
According to BHG, one of fallĢƵ most versatile supplies is burlap, and it adds rustic appeal to any wreath.
To make a dazzling entry accessory from burlap BHG wrapped a foam wreath with burlap ribbon, securing the ends at the top. Glue on textural embellishments, such as felt flowers, berry branches, and a burlap bunting.
Chalkboard pumpkins are also a great front porch accessory, said BHG. They’re fast and easy to make simply by taking the handle off a plastic candy bucket and covering it with matte black chalkboard paint. Place a small pot of orange mums inside for a robust of color.
Another idea from BHG is carving personalized pumpkins to welcome your friends and family to your home.
This can be done with a small, medium, and large pumpkin etching each one with a monogram. Rest them on an old chair or stool to show off your work.
You can also scatter and stack gourds in soft, creamy colors to spruce up your entry whereas cool-weather edibles such as ornamental flowering cabbages, kale, and bay leaves can add a distinctive twist.
Place them in country-style baskets or wooden trays and use pots of ornamental kale and fall flowers to complete the look.
Using a wire-tiered plant stand on your porch saves display space and creates an easy home for smaller items, according to BHG.
You can also capture the seasonĢƵ charm with rustic garland made from ears of fall corn and dried husks and best of all, you can pick the scheme that best matches your decor.
The garland is made by creating hooks by twisting small eye screws into the wide end of each ear.
Bend the husks into loops and seal the pointy ends together with hot glue.
Finally, string the ears onto twine, alternating with corn husks as you go. Hang above your door or along your porch eaves for a simply beautiful effect.
