Dunbar to celebrate 13th annual community fest

The rhythm of America’s roots to be performed by local blue grass musicians will serve as a prelude to the 13th annual Dunbar Community Fest.

The weekend event will be held Sept. 26-28 in honor of Dunbar Boy Scout Troop 180, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary.

“Each year the fest crowd grows,” said Cindy Moag, community fest member.

The fun begins Friday at 7 p.m. in the Big Top tent with blue grass music featuring Perry Russell and the Dunbar Boys along with other blue grass musicians. A 50/50 ticket sale will also take place.

Saturday’s lineup officially kicks off at 8 a.m. with a 5K run/walk that starts at the Dunbar Honor Roll and ends on the Sheepskin Bike Trail.

Participants can show their support to raise awareness of heart disease in women by wearing a red dress in conjunction with the American Heart Association.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. at Dunbar Fire Hall. Trophies and door prizes will be awarded.

Those who pre-register for a $17 fee will receive a T-shirt. The cost to register the day of the race is $20, however, T-shirts will be limited.

Donations to the American Heart Association will be accepted separate from the race. For more information call Moag at 724-628-6716.

The fest will also be showcasing its 3rd Christmas ornament in a limited series created by Tom Pollard Designs of Pittsburgh.

The brass ornament was designed in recognition of Troop 180 based on information provided by Troop Leader Robert Martin. Cost of the ornament is $12.95 and can be purchased during the fest.

It is currently on display at the Dunbar Historical Society, borough council chambers and the Dunbar Post Office.

Following the race, a co-ed volleyball tournament will start at 10 a.m. at the Dunbar Little League Baseball Field. Cost is $12 per person to enter. ĢƵ is B.A. Lambie at 724-562-9999.

The parade begins at 10:30 a.m., with the Dunbar Helping Hands Senior Citizens riding in the Kennywood trolley.

A zumba demonstration will be held at 11 a.m. in the Big Top tent followed by Little Miss and Colonel Dunbar pageant at noon.

The pageant is open to children ages kindergarten to third grade. Registration is $10.

Magician Steve Haberman will provide entertainment while Pinky the Clown, a balloon twist artist will make a debut.

Boy Scout Troop 180 will present an informative demonstration at 1 p.m.

A car, truck and bike show is on tap from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Dunbar Volunteer Fire Department.

Registration is $10 a vehicle and dash plaques will be presented. D.J. Arnie Amber will provide oldies music and trophies and prizes will be awarded.

The Franklin United Methodist Church will have a quilt show and basket raffles at the Dunbar Presbyterian Church. The Dunbar Library will have a book sale and 50/50 ticket sale.

A kiddie barrel train, petting zoo, games, face painting and pumpkin decorating are among a host of children’s activities. A balloon artist will also be on hand from noon to 3 p.m.

Craft and flea market booths will be set up at various locations and will have a $10 registration fee. To reserve a space, call Robert Scholz at 724-570-7326.

Jeff Bryner’s Hurdy Gurdy antique Wurlitzer band organ will also return to the fest.

Food will be provided by civic groups and churches with a menu of hot dogs, hamburgers, BBQ chicken, baked beans, soups, salad, cabbage and noodles, hot sausage, creamed chicken and biscuits, Italian favorites and more.

Desserts will also be up for grabs.

The 12th annual duck derby will be held at 4 p.m. at Dunbar Creek. ĢƵ Linda Rechenberg at 724-277-8289 to purchase ducks.

Starting at 3 p.m. the Hi-Riders Band of Dawson will play a variety of oldies and country music.

Dunbar’s finest actors will end Saturday’s activities with skit at 6 p.m. in the Big Top.

There are no admission fees for entertainment.

Moag said a free shuttle service is being provided from the parking area at Action Oil on Woodvale Street to the Big Top area.

A bus will also travel from Action Oil through downtown to Maloy’s Garage to pick up passengers.

On Sunday, Pastor Dave Douhitt of New Life Baptist Church will lead an Ecumenical church service at 10:30 a.m.

The fest closes later in the day with a Mayor’s Teen Dance from 6 to 10 p.m. for grades seven to 12.

Music will be provided by TK the D.J. There will be chaperones and security.
