One person was taken to Uniontown Hospital following a fire that damaged a duplex at 510 Garner St. in South Union Township and forced two families from their homes on Wednesday.

Jason Lape, who lives in one side of the duplex with his girlfriend and her children, said his girlfriend her daughter were home when the fire started in a second-floor bedroom. His girlfriend was having difficulty breathing and might have suffered smoke inhalation, he said.

“Thank God everybody made it out. I’m just freaked out,” Lape said.

State police fire marshals were at the duplex trying to determine the cause of the fire, which was reported at 6:36 p.m.

The South Union Township and Hopwood volunteer fire departments and the Uniontown Fire Department responded to the fire.
