Sunrooms brighten up home space, bring outdoors inside
A sunroom can add space and natural light to a home and function as a place to relax and bring the outdoors inside year round in any type of weather.
According to houselogic.com, supported by the National Association of Realtors®, sunrooms have come a long way from enclosed glass porches.
“TodayĢƵ versions are full-fledged year-round rooms featuring cathedral ceilings, skylights, energy-efficient windows, tile flooring, heat, and air conditioning,” states houselogic.
Better Homes and Gardens (BHG), notes that sunrooms are gaining popularity as common house additions because they can support a casual lifestyle and add flexible living space.
While sunrooms can be costly because they are mainly comprised of multiple windows and doors, people can also opt for using screens to enclose a front or back porch.
Larry Miller, owner of Unlimited Home Improvements in South Connellsville, said he recently constructed a deck around a swimming pool with the owner considering to add a screened-in room for changing.
“They have a lot of different uses,” said Miller, whose business is listed on homeadvisor.com. “If you want to keep the bugs out, screens are the way to go, but if you have glass it can be used year-round.”
Dave Hampton, division manager at Champion based in Ohio, said the company manufactures custom sunrooms in Allegheny, Fayette and surrounding counties within a 70-mile radius of its Pittsburgh location.
Hampton said sunrooms are ideal in creating more space and provide easy access to fresh air and natural sunlight.
Some can be energy efficient, depending on the type of materials used. “Most of what we build is all glass and thatĢƵ where technology comes into play,” Hampton said.
Hampton said sunrooms function either as three or four season rooms depending on the amount of time during the year they are used.
Three-season rooms are used in spring, summer, and fall, while all season rooms can be used in the winter because they have a heating and cooling system.
Homeadvisor.com notes that many people consider an enclosed patio part of the home and may even decorate the space with furniture and electronics, making the area equipped for lounging and entertaining guests.
Since sunrooms function as both indoor and outdoor spaces, experts say the location is dependent on the amount of sun exposure throughout the year in various areas.
