Man, dog escape fire in Connellsville Twp. home
CONNELLSVILLE TWP. — A man escaped a fire that started accidentally while he was cooking in his home on Springfield Pike, Tuesday evening.
The fire, reported at 5:16 p.m., started in the kitchen and quickly spread, destroying the mobile home at 1101 1/2 Springfield Pike, said Joe Brooks, chief of the Connellsville Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighters rescued the ownerĢƵ dog from inside the burning home and used a pet oxygen mask to help him recover, Brooks said.
He said the fire was an accident.
Theodore Keffer Jr. said he was cooking when the kitchen erupted in flames.
“I was cooking on the stove, and the whole kitchen caught fire,” said Keffer.
He said he owns the home and has lived there 11 years. He said he has insurance and plans to build a new home.
Keffer said he was happy the firefighters rescued his 12-year-old dog, Littlebit, a mixed breed female.
The Red Cross was called to provide clothing for Keffer, Brooks said.
The New Haven Hose Co., Bullskin Township and Scottdale volunteer fire departments also responded to the fire. The South Connellsville Volunteer Fire Department was on standby.
Brooks said the township department was among those that responded to the large brush fire in Perry and Lower Tyrone townships earlier in the day. He said the alarm for the house fire came in shortly after the firefighters returned to the station from the brush fire.
