An off-duty police officer was the first on the scene when a driver crashed after an apparent medical emergency in Dunbar Township Wednesday.

State police suspected the driver had a heart attack that caused him to clip a tree and drive up an embankment at 366 Vanderbilt Road at about 11 a.m.

The man was flown from the scene by STAT MedEvac.

Witnesses said they heard a loud boom and saw the driver slumped over his wheel. The officer, who state police said worked for Perryopolis Police Department, was heading to a K9 training session in the opposite direction.

“Thank God he was coming through,” said Geneva Sumey, who lives next door to the field where the man crashed.

She said he performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the man for about five to 10 minutes before emergency personnel arrived.

The truck was carrying a load of firewood when it went off the road. The bed detached and crashed to the ground, along with the firewood, when the driver impacted the tree.

“It was just a big, metal boom,” Sumey said.

She said she saw the wreck and the man inside the cabin and called 911.

The name of the driver has not been released. Police said he was displaying vital signs when he was transported, though his current condition is unknown.
