Police investigating swastikas painted in Monongahela
Monongahela police are seeking five juveniles who they say spray-painted eight cars and four structures in the city, two with swastikas.
The youths were seen on a surveillance tape recorded on Union Street at about 4 a.m. Sunday. The youths are seen trying to open the doors of several parked cars, then pulling out red spray paint.
Monongahela police Chief Brian Tempest said eight cars were defaced on Union, Elmira and Ann streets in the Mounds section of the city. In addition, a swastika was painted on one house and the youths apparently attempted to paint another of the symbols of Nazi hatred on another home.
The word “Christ” was painted on another home and a sexual profanity was painted on the brick of a memorial that denoted the construction of The Mounds ball field in 1954.
Tempest though said the vandalism appeared to be random and doubted the youths knew the significance of the symbol.
Tempest said police are seeking help from the public in identifying suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call Monongahela police at 724-258-5511 or 911.
“I feel confident we’re going to catch who did this,” Tempest said.
